Not Kerry news but you know whats depressing
Sunday's my 18th birthday and I have nothing planned. I already registered to vote. I don't smoke so being able to buy cigareetes doesnt interest me. Porn well, its porn. Of course this also makes me "legal" though with my luck I wont be getting any you know what soon. Sorry if I sound depress, rough day I guess, and weird thoughts going through my mind like always. Carry on with ya day.

It just looks like right now I am gonna be having a typical day, and the thing that gets me is I am gonna feel nothing really turning 18. I may shave though to look nicer for my birthday, I look lke crap now.

5. Don't make that an option.
The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it.
-Goethe

In other words, life is what you make it, young Kleeb. Get out there and make a birthday you will remember.

Have a happy, happy birthday.

3. LOL
Happy birthday! I turned 18 in November - exactly 3 weeks after the election. It couldn't have been a more depressing birthday. Since then, I've registered to vote, but I have no interest in buying cigarettes or porn, so I know how it feels to have a sucky 18th birthday. Just go out with some friends to dinner or something - that's what I did and it did make me feel somewhat better (you can also go to a strip club! I haven't done that though, lol). Anyway, have a very happy birthday! :yourock:

Then I saw you talking about being in high school and I was surprised. This was before the Kerry forum, btw... I wonder if people can guess how old I am without any hints.

7. haha, i know what you mean
when you are younger you always think about all the things you will be able to do when you just turn of legal age. and once you are about to turn 18 it seems a bit of a let down.

but don't worry about it too much. you get over it fast. and a few months from now you probably aren't going to care about whether you did anything big on the 18th birthday.

26. Ha yeah
I am fine, though I am feeling massive political disillusionment right now. Still believing what I always have but every day I feel forced to the center, I am no centrist, and while this all happens, I continue to loathe Bush and his assholes and also feel less and less respect for the Clintons.

And I'm pretty pissed at Bill right now, too. But the thing is, I think there are two Dems that almost everyone expects to be perfect, John Kerry and Bill Clinton. Anyone else can make a mistake or say the 'wrong' thing, and be excused for it except our two headliners. So, sometimes I just give them the benefit of the doubt. As long as it doesn't become habit and it's not too egregious, I'll get over it and Bill will be back in my good graces sooner or later.
Hill, well I respect her and I think she deserves the same.
We have a lot of good people on our side, but they're all human. Even Bill Clinton.

edit Lance was riding a tricycle when I turned 18, so I guess I'll forgive him, too.
:P

Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 08:22 PM by JohnKleeb
Its some of the shit some people who are on our side here sometimes say, god makes me feel really angry and I used to think I was far left hah, as if, at least my beliefs havent changed. Theres just so much Ive learned the past year sicne the election especially about the ignorance on all sides, you got some far leftists who expect and demand perfection from democrats who are the same time prejudiced people without even knowing it then you got far right loons who are afraid of lesbians in their high schoools, and think nuking Mecca may be ok.

29. That's the hard part.
You would think we could at least agree to disagree instead of eating our own.
This is the one that really killed me today. Poster complaining about "another Kerry thread". Well, sir, the title of the thread was "Kerry..." and the OP was kerrygoddess. WTF. You would think he would just skip to the next thread, but NOOOOOO. Had to jump in and complain.
What, really, does he expect Kerry supporters to post? I can't imagine one of us jumping into a Clark or a Dean thread and complaining about "another ___ thread".
Anyway, the great thing about Dems. We accept just about any opinion :-) , and we accept just about any opinion :( .

30. I hear what you are saying Kleeb but
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 08:47 PM by Island Blue
I think that if we (generic we)think of ourselves as "liberals" and have a liberal belief system (equality for all, helping our fellow man, strong defense of the environment, an understanding of the world and its people, etc., etc.) we should fight not to let anyone, from the far left or the far right, high jack the word and distort its meaning.

I think that's what has happened on the right with the term "conservative". There was a time not so long ago, when that wasn't a dirty word and it meant primarily someone who was fiscally responsible (maybe a bit of tight wad), who kept their nose out of people's business. The far right has been allowed to high jack that word and now it means an uptight prick who wants to tell you (generic you) what to do, how to do it and who to do it with all the while spending money like it's going out of style and starting wars with sovereign nations.

I think a lot of people who are left of center are just pissed off right now (with good reason) and want their voices to be heard weather on DU or in some other arena. Sometimes, some people say really stupid things and it is frustrating to listen to or read. Hang in there Kleeb, we need bight, passionate young people like yourself on our side!!

32. I understand people are pissed but
Maybe its just my bias as a person who has had relatives suffer by real tyrants but I think people are ignorant to compare Bush to Hitler and other terrible totaliterans, and those who question that are treated as if they are apologizing for Bush's crap.

33. Yeah, I kind of feel like Jon Stewart on that one
when he pleaded a couple of weeks ago for everyone to stop comparing people to Hitler. I don't remember what he said exactly (my brain is older than 18), but basically he pointed out how silly it was to do so because by saying these things (about members of the opposing party for example)you downplay the horrors committed by Hitler.

Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 09:30 PM by JohnKleeb
Jon is right on about that. Jon's Jewish so I can understand why Nazi comparsions may upset him. I am not Jewish but my grandparents had family in Eastern Europe when the Nazis invaded and if oyu know about the third reich, you may know that they hated Slavs too. Stewart has it right perfectly why people shouldnt do that, it makes Hitler in to in my opinion a mere footnote, Ive never seen the concentration camps in person, the movie Schindler's List honestly is what has me hating these comparsions even more. Both sides do it too, Santorum was wrong to compare democrats to nazis for how they are on right wing judges and our side is rwong to compare Bush to Hitelr.

35. Let's sing to Kleeb.
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 10:01 PM by CBHagman
Okay, everybody, do your best Nat King Cole or Ella Fitzgerald imitation and sing!

There will be many other nights like this,
And I'll be standing here with someone new.
There will be other songs to sing,
Another fall...another spring...
But there will never be another you.

Full lyrics:

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/There-Will-Never-Be-Another-You-lyrics-Nat-King-Cole/A8C283FBD1E8F56E48256AF1000C9BC4

Hey, it may not be "your" song or your generation's music, but there will never be another you, and you are entitled to go out and start making memories.

Birthdays are a real hurdle generally in terms of planning ("You want a miracle to happen on your birthday," one friend of mine observed). You might hope for something wonderful but not know how about getting it. Worst of all is when it seems people or circumstances are working against you.

Back when I was at university, I was having what looked like a bad birthday (blackout in the dorm, call from unempathetic stepmother) when my two best friends called and dragged me out to a club, where someone did indeed sing "There Will Never Be Another You" just for me.

So here's to you. May you have many, many, many happy memories and make more every day. :toast:

Anyhow I saw that thread about the women whos being ridiucled, sheesh, if it was revealed some of the KIAs in Iraq voted Bush, would they be mocked too, sad to say I think so, furthering my belief many oppose the war just to oppose Bush.
