None Dare Call it Stolen
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 02:38 PM by whometense
Our August issue of Harper's Magazine just arrived.

Big article by Mark Crispin Miller titled None Dare Call it Stolen: Ohio, the election, and America's servile press. I haven' t even read the whole thing yet, but wanted to give a heads up. It looks really good. And I don't know if it will be online or not.

1. I didn't see it online.
Is it worth buying a copy for the article?

4. Finally read it.

I don't think there was a lot of new info in the article, but he did put together a coherent (and completely infuriating) nutshell narrative of the disaster that was the Ohio 2004 vote. I read it too late, and it kept me up for hours after my bedtime, fuming.

If you know anyone who doubts there was election fraud, I'd recommend putting this article in front of them. It's not a long read, and it's pretty compelling. I particularly appreciated the emphasis he put on the derision the story received in the media. Anyone who still believes today that Kerry won Ohio (and the election) probably won't find much new there.

Reading it did make me think about how much valuable election information was lost. Conyers (bless his heart) et al did a great job putting the Ohio story together, but there was also a New Mexico story (thank you, Gov. Richardson), and a Florida story, and an Iowa story, and a Virginia story, and who knows how many others that will never be told.

7. read it.... now I'm all depressed
It's so obvious that the election was stolen and it's equally obvious that our biggest enemy isn't neccesarily the Republicans - it's the press.

I had some hope that the internet would be the thing that would save us from the neocons - maybe it will - but, mostly what I see online is the circular firing squad.

8. The amazing thing is that Kerry did as well as he did
with the incredible bias of the much of the press. Their bias alone should have made it unnessesary to cheat and surpress votes. This is really depressing - especially as the liklihood is that it may lead to a neo-con / neo liberal contest next time - both continuing the appalling, disasterous foreign policy. Especially sad when Kerry possibly should be President.

I hope that there are enough people who vote in the Dem primaries to prevent this. Kerry may be the best hope to prevent this. I'm not sure there's another viable candidate on this side of the spectrum. (Also, I wonder if some of the powers that be will discourage the other candidates (Warner, Vilsack, Bayh, and Biden) from running to strengthen Hillary.

10. how true
another thing that's been getting to me is the "Kerry ran a lousy campaign/was a horrible candidate", etc. thing - and hearing it from the left! A local lefty talk show host (Jay Marvin) said that a few weeks ago.

Don't they get it? Or is it the usual lefty internet din that had Howard Dean winning the nomination?

How is Kerry going to handle the media next time when he's getting fired on from both shores, as it were?

When our own side doesn't seem to understand how the MSM distorts things... what chance do we have?

12. You know,
I may be alone in thinking this, but since I was on Kerry's side so early in the process last time I was acutely aware of the early polls. I remember, in fact, the memorable national poll that put him behind Al Sharpton. I still believe that the polls showing her so far ahead are totally meaningless, showing name recognition only. At this point in the last election cycle Joe Lieberman had a commanding lead.

I really believe the Hillary push originates from:

a.) Right wing nutjobs who still are frothing at the mouth over Clinton (they may never give up their obsession), and are dying to get Hillary up there just to shoot her down.

b.) The candyass media who can't wean themselves off their horserace fetish and have to promote someone early on so they can knock them down later and have a big story to sell.

c.) Bill Clinton's attention-mongering. He can't stand to be out of the spotlight, can he? Maybe he has a deal with Hillary. Who knows? I just don't believe she has a vast and devoted following. I just don't.

14. well, she hasn't said anything in so many words
Wouldn't that be a nice joke on all of them if she doesn't run. It does make good fodder for the press, especially the right. Limbaugh just loved making mincemeat of both Clintons during the 90s. So much so, I'll bet he voted for them, just to keep Bill around!

I agree with you on Bill; if anyone should have been named "live-shot"...

19. I think you're right
I haven't seen any polls myself that show Hillary compared to anybody except John McCain. For whatever reason the republicans seem really hung on having her as the nominee and the "press" as well. Very suspecious I think.

9. Maybe not a panacea,
but did you see sandnsea's post about the LWV Ohio lawsuit??

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=273x36560

That has to be great news. I'm trying to avoid creeping pollyanna-ism, but I find it encouraging that we are now seeing a second wave of articles and activity on the election. I think the internet actually did a hell of a job keeping this alive.

That said, the circular firing squad is alive and much too well, but I believe it is a very small circle. So let them fire away. Maybe they'll keep each other so busy they'll stay out of the way of the people who are actually doing stuff. ;-)

11. missed that - thanks
That's good news, and it is good that the "stolen election" is making it back in the news.

Yes, the firing squad here on the internets isn't a reflection of the real world out there - but after seeing so much positive stuff, it's been a real drag to see such a resurgence of negative shit these last few days (especially here at DU). It has been getting to me.

20. I think it's great too
I think maybe one reason why the press isn't afraid to talk about it now is all the trouble Karl Rove is in. He doesn't seem to have anything on them anymore (power wise) so hopefully more people can talk about it.

15. I agree - it's an attempt to get to a solution to the vote fraud
issue going forward. The LWV is a perfect group to push this - they have been non-partisan and for informed voting for decades. From November on many of Kerry's comments have been on the need to fix these voting issues on a local basis. (It's interesting that his brother is thinking of running for Sec of State. How better for Kerry to get good inside information on voting machines etc? )

I am disturbed that the media is still bashing Kerry when they can - but given their own role, allowing people to see that Kerry really is a good person and a thoughtful, inteligent leader might cause people to ask why the reporters/commentators they trusted lied to them. It should though be very hard to ignore Kerry's consistent stands stated in polite, reasonable terms as they continue for the next 4 years.

I think the only thing that will change the LW press is if the combination of Kerry being their best hope and Kerry talking to them about the same things he is saying in the Senate and in his letters comes about. Unless a new superstar appears, this could happen. The biggest problem may be that the left leaning MSM is still enchanted with the Clintons.

16. Kerry is the best hope for us all--
--if only people realized it. But he's been pretty well type-cast in the media as either "loser" or "bad politician". And USA Today yesterday was throwing cold water on the idea of any senator winning the White House, since only two have. Sigh. Without fraud in Ohio, I'm sure it would now be three.

But on the positive side, any facts uncovered about the election being stolen, and Kerry being another disenfranchised candidate like Gore will go a long way toward dispelling the loser image.

Also, as has been noted in this group, JK was changed by the campaign and made better by it. He's more able to connect with his audiences now. He really communicates. Back in 2003 he was more of a standard politician; I think people might be surprised when they get a chance to take a fresh look.

17. The Republicans CONTROL the press. Most of broadcast media is absolutely
under the thumb of their corporate masters who enrich themselves under Bush's policies and warmongering.
