What's Happening in Ohio - Paul Hackett Campaign
Pirhana, you asked for it. Here are my notes from the weekend.

First, I have to say that although Ohio is my neighbor, and it's border with Pennsylvania less than an hour away from my home, the City of Cincinnati is a five hour drive. So why, instead of sending cash to Paul Hackett's campaign, did I decide to embark on this journey? There are a few Democrats in Ohio, after all.
More than anything, the need to do SOMETHING has been building for some time. Dragging out the credit card just wasn't enough to get me going anymore. Posting on the DU forums wasn't really doing it for me either. I needed more.
So, after seeing Paul on Hardball the other night, I seized the opportunity. I could get behind this man, I thought. An Iraq war vet who rails against the policies of the administration over an unjust war. A straight shooter who says what he means, popular or not. Hmmm...why does that sound vaguely familiar?
So, I made the drive from Pittsburgh early on Saturday morning. Beautiful weather greeted me and stayed with me throughout the trip. Alternating Sirius Left with a variety of tunes, the road trip was pleasant enough. I traveled alone, both out of necessity (having
blown off a friend's big summer party, the one that 'everyone' would be attending), and because my goal was introspection, as much as it was about Ohio's next District 2 Congressman.

The Highlights and the Heartache (and other injuries)

Day One:
First, and amazingly, I saw ONE, count 'em, ONE bush* bumper sticker in that five hour stretch between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. I good omen, I hoped. Getting off the highway exit, however, I noticed four large signs for Paul's opponent, Jean Schmidt. Her signs were pretty much everywhere, ours were scattered. Evidence of the disparity of campaign funding. We had quite a few, but the ratio was probably close to 2:1.
I got to the headquarters office around one in the afternoon, and immediately got my canvassing list. To my dismay, the 'girl from the suburbs' got unfamiliar territory, rural Ohio farmland. Few street signs, addresses that jumped around with no rhyme or reason, and only scattered house numbers, because 'everyone' already knows where everyone else's house is. Funny how some people are not aware that an address is not complete unless it comes with an apartment number and a nine digit zip code.
I did manage to find most of the addresses on my list and, for the most part, the interaction was positive. Most folks were home, almost all were pleasant, and expressing a preference for Paul. Of course, I was working a Kerry voter list, so that was expected. I couldn't help but wonder if all those folks' votes were actually counted last November. The questions of Ohio 2004 will not fade.
Very early on, I had my first encounter with western Ohio wildlife. At my second stop, I was attacked, YES, ATTACKED, by a mallard duck. Not once, but twice. OK, admittedly, I screamed like a little girl, all the while hoping tomorrow's headlines in the local gazette won't read "Hackett Supporter's Duck and Cover Moment", with accompanying photo. In an act of what can only be described as extreme stupidity, I went back to the scene for a picture of the offender. Bad move. The guard duck was having nothing of this silly woman with her exposed toes just ripe for the pecking. OK, just leave the literature on the mailbox and get the heck out while you have all your digits, GV. Obviously the duck is there for a reason.

Photo of mad duck laying in wait

Two houses later, disaster strikes. An extreme pro-lifer (Catholic variety). Abortion was not her most important issue, it was her ONLY issue. And she told me that in no uncertain terms, all the while holding back her dozen or so grandkids. I tried to explain the reality of pro-life, but when her daughter with the huge cross on her tank top stepped in, I backed off. I believe if she'd have had a shotgun handy, I might have been staring down the business end of it, but luckily, that was not the case. I made a somewhat hasty retreat.
Most of the rest of my visits were much more congenial. The dinner invite from a really cute guy (serious Dem) was a highlight. I'm already kicking myself for turning that one down. When I pulled into his driveway, he was at his elderly neighbor's house and came out to meet me, explaining that his neighbor was a Republican, but that she was still OK and would be voting for Paul. Sigh...onward.
One gentleman had just buried his father, and was obviously in need of an ear. I spent more time than I should have, but it was time well spent, I think.
Another said her vote was 'none of my business'. OK, that's fair, I guess. Rude, but true. I felt my participation was an act of civic responsibility. I guess hers was an expression of her right to privacy. Both valid. Oh, well...move on from that ugly encounter.
Oh, BTW, I have a great remedy for horsefly bites, recommended by a kindly Hackett supporter, if you ever need it.
Too tired to continue after the long drive and my first day in the field, I headed back to the office to check in. As luck would have it, I missed Max Cleland by a half hour. Damn me for spending so much time with cute guy and pro-life lady.

Day Two:
I guess I should tell you a bit about Hackett's campaign office. Located in the small town of Batavia, OH, the office is directly across the street from our opponent's. Ms Schmidt's is larger, plastered with campaign signs. Ours, a bit smaller, has a few
signs, but seemingly, a lot more activity. Inside, it's a frat house. The staff is young and inspired. They really believe in the campaign, and are working madly to get this guy elected. There are other campaign offices in the district, but this is the only
one I visited. I'm here a bit before 10 am, and find that, once again, I will not get to meet Max Cleland, who is such an inspiration. Max will speak at the county fair this afternoon, while I must head home to Pittsburgh. One of the staffers here, who seems
to know Max pretty well, says he's a true gentleman, and that I should stay. Sadly, that's not in the cards this time.
I will answer the office phones this morning, then do a bit of phone banking. Sunday mornings are difficult, as I recall from the Kerry campaign, but the election is two days away, and every call is the potential winning vote.
The calls are great. I left a lot of messages, pointing folks to the website, and letting them know how important their vote is to Paul and to all of us. The people I did reach were very positive. A few were not aware of the election, but most were, and indicated that they will be supporting Paul.
I met some Clarkies, who drove in from out of town to help. One was from Philly, so we were the Pennsylvania contingent. Nice folks, but wrong candidate. Of course, I told them that although I think the General is kinda hot, I'm a Kerry gal, and that's not likely to change.
The drive back was uneventful, and I'm beat. Bumper sticker count on the way home was bush*-ZERO, Kerry-two. Actually, one car had five Kerry stickers, so the tally is per vehicle, not per sticker.
Hope I haven't bored you to death. I realize this post is very long, but it was great fun working for Paul, and I wanted to share. It helped to be involved again and look forward to facing '06.
Will he win? It will be a very close race, but I'm hopeful. And that might have been my real reason for going.

As I'm finishing this little travelogue, I just received a call from the campaign. We covered 2,300 houses in Clairmont County on Saturday. I'm happy to have done my small part.

1. That sounds like quite an adventure!
Thanks for giving us the play by play! From what I've read of Hackett he really does remind me of Kerry when he was in his 20's. (Even though I know Hackett is in his early 40's.) I really hope he wins on Tuesday. Of course it would be great for Ohio, but I also think it would go a long way in helping with the moral of Democratic Party members in general. (Especially since the race involves Ohio.)

Thanks for risking your exposed toes to help with the cause!

2. Thanks for the news!
I'm glad you could go out and do it.

I'm really rooting for Paul (besides sending him some bucks). Wish I could've helped with the campaign this weekend too.

That guard duck sounds like a riot! I've met vicious geese before, but never an attack duck. One thing about canvassing, you always come back with interesting stories!

3. Thanks for the great report
We use to love it on the Kerry blog when people brought back their on ground reports of rallies and townhall meetings, we always knew we were getting the real story.

I really hope he wins. I keep on telling everyone we had our own Iraq veteran run for Congress last year here in Hampton Roads Virginia. The Repubs had to hurry up and get a candidate up since the one they had got caught as being homosexual, which nothing wrong with that unless your Republican, he resigned instead of answering any questions.

Our guy was David Ashe who I met several times and he was on stage with Kerry a year ago. Well as you may have guessed he lost, the Repubs care more about their party than the troops. I hope he will run again in '06.

Those are some wicked ducks, luckily the ones we get in our yard everyday, just want our bread crumbs not our toes.

P.S. Here is our Iraq vet's website, I hope everyone will be on his bandwagon in '06. Max was here for him too, what a guy.

4. I believe Ashe is running again
Hes a DUer's cousin I believe. Anyhow speaking of congressional campaigns, I wonder if Socas will run against Wolf again. I dont think Hackett will win but hopefully he can get himself noticed and bring up issues that need to be brought up.

5. I really thought Ashe would win
He was right there, he had everyone endorse him from police to teachers to both our newspapers. I think he got like 43%, funny thing is the only place where Kerry lost in Hampton Roads was Virginia Beach, which was most of Ashe's territory, and also out of the blue we had our voting districts split and people were going to their old place to vote and many were being sent to a different place, people were very upset about that, and lines everywhere, just makes you wonder.

6. Well he did better than Socas
Who was the most serious challenger to Frank Wolf in ages. I dont like Wolf but he's better than most of the downstate republican congresspeople, same with my old congressman, Tom Davis, I think I had Leslie Bryne for one term in the 90s, anyhow, I think Kaine can be our next governor but I think Bolling will beat Byrne for Lt Governor, it would have been very interesting had it been Chip Peterson Vs Sean Counnington, the AG race got no idea, I want to have two of the three main seats especially governor.

7. I didn't realize that Kerry won almost all of Hampton Roads.
I know I should have known that seeing as how Hampton Roads news is pretty much the news we get down here, but I was so depressed after the election I didn't watch or read any news for more than a week. That's very positive though considering the large military presence in the area.

I was really hoping Ashe would win too. I remember when I heard that Ed Sprock withdrew from the race I thought he would really have a good shot at it. And yes, you always have to wonder about stuff when Repukes are involved in any way.

8. IMO Kerry won Virginia
I was too very depressed and cried for days. But being that I was working on the Kerry blog, although the blog shut down, we were behind the scenes, pushing as much info we had on votes to the campaign. I'll tell you, the polls and the numbers just did not click. Although I screamed NO when Kerry conceded, I realized later he had no other choice, the man was a Prosecutor, he knew that he didn't have the proof that would be needed to continue and hit te deadline in December. I wish it could have been different and I know that he would of embarked on a fight if he got the proof he needed. I think someday soon, we will know the real fraud that took place that day.

By the way I think the college kids really were distressed that day. My daughter called crying that day, she goes to VCU in Richmond, she said they gave wrong info to students and she herself ended up being registered in Virginia Beach and Richmond, and those that mailed in absentee ballots, thought that their vote did not count. We really need to change the way college students have to vote, with so many of them not being able to make it home to vote or being from out of state. I know my daughter's boyfriend drove home to Northern Virginia that day missing classes, because he wanted to make sure his vote counted.

13. You were talking about the college kids not being able to vote,
having to skip class, etc.... I really think Election Day (particularly when electing a President) should be a national holiday like Kerry and some others have suggested. I know the Repukes would never go for that because goodness knows they wouldn't want to make it easy for people now would they? I went at 7 a.m. and had to wait for more than an hour, and I live in a small town. God bless those folks who waited in line for hours and hours just to cast votes which may or may not have been counted. It's just disgraceful that in a supposed Democracy, people should have to jump through such hoops just to exercise their right to vote.

And I agree with you Fedup, as much as I hated it, I don't think Kerry had any other choice but to concede when he did.

10. G.V. Thanks for the report!
It sounds like you had quite a time. I bet you will never forget it!

So things seem pretty positive in Hackett land? I hope that he wins. It will be such a huge statement to all of the politicians.

About the cute guy, you should have said "forget dinner, you're canvassing with me". No, just joking.
And if it makes you feel any better, I was once bit by a duck. 16 years old, cutting across a park to get to school. The duck came out of nowhere and bit me on the back of my knee! Mean little things aren't they? It didn't hurt. I was surprised, and embarassed.
Maybe Schmidt sent that mallard after you!:), or maybe the pro-lifers - ugh. Good thing you left when you did.

Thanks again for reporting, and for being our representative in his campaign!

17. Pirhana, your cartoon gave me hysterics!
It's a bit off topic, but we take our laughs as they come.

And I really enjoyed Global Village's account of the journey to and through Ohio. Good on you, GV. I was a Kerry Traveler myself, and there's nothing like going out and talking to the people.

That duck was probably straight from the pit of hell or Karl Rove's office (same difference).

Sounds like a real boost to the spirit, to get back involved and doing something positive. Win or lose, he's taking a good Dem message to a part of the country that really needs to hear it and that's worth an awful lot. And you'll know you helped.

I don't know how people like Jean Schmidt win. She's just a political parrot, it's amazing people don't see it.

14. Great report
That campaign does sound so exciting. It will be great if he wins because as someone who really knows what is happenning in Iraq he would be a unique vote for truth in the house.

It will be great if you helped him win - but even if he loses - he might come back to win later (like a VN anti-war vet did).

Each Dem leader has a great group of dedicated citizens working with them, and too often the shared goals and passions go unheralded.

This is a very nice description and a very nice work. I hope he wins today.

However, some people on GDP are amazing me when they support Hackett. I could think that he is advocating for a "Get Out of Iraq Now".

They probably never bothered reading his position on the issue.

http://hackettforcongress.com/index.php?page=display&id=69

I like his position and agree wholeheartedly with that, but it is amusing how it would be seen as Bushlike coming from some other people.

You are right about his position. People here would say it was a Bushlike position. But, Bill Clinton might say he was weak on defense as he sounds closer to Kerry or even Kennedy than to Bush and himself.
