Statement by John Kerry on the Passing of John H. Johnson
WASHINGTON – Below is a statement from Senator John Kerry on the passing of publisher John H. Johnson.

“I was saddened to learn of the death of John H. Johnson yesterday, one of the most influential publishers of our time. John Johnson’s magazines, Ebony and Jet, have played a critical role in American culture for more than 50 years and are among the leading voices for African Americans today. Not only did John provide high quality journalism and entertainment for his readers, he also helped American business leaders understand the power of the African American consumer. “He also wasn’t afraid to take risks. In 1955, his decision to publish photos in Jet of Emmett Till’s brutally beaten body in his open casket sparked an important national discussion on civil rights and helped lead to progress on key civil rights legislation. “John’s life story epitomized the American dream. He sold his mother’s furniture to start his first magazine, working his way to the top of both the business and publishing worlds. “John will long be remembered for his contributions to journalism, minority enterprise and civil rights. It is a fitting tribute that his pioneering work will live on through the leadership of his daughter Linda Johnson Rice. “John inspired so many and he will be missed by his readers, his many friends and his family. My thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.”

Mr. Johnson is an icon who will be missed. My family still subscribes to Ebony today. Thanks Senator Kerry.
