Senator Kerry Joins Social Security Birthday Celebration
11 August 2005
Saturday is the 70th birthday of Social Security, the most successful social program in our country’s history. The DNC has been celebrating the occasion by offering a new fact each day to highlight “how this program positively affects the lives of millions of hard-working Americans.” Saturday, Senator Kerry will deliver the Spanish language Democratic radio address discussing the benefits of Social Security to the Hispanic population.
According to the DNC’s fact of the day, the poverty rate among Hispanic seniors would triple without the Social Security program,
The poverty rate among African American seniors would more than double,
Social Security lifts 1 million children above the poverty line.
More facts from Campaign for America’s Future:
In 1935, nearly half of all seniors lived in poverty. Today—thanks to Social Security—poverty among seniors has been nearly eradicated. (The Century Foundation and The Center for American Progress)
For 70 years, Social Security always paid benefits on time. Through national tragedies, natural disasters and economic downturns, Social Security never missed a payment. (Social Security Administration)
Today, Social Security provides financial security for 33 million retired workers and their dependents, 7 million survivors of deceased workers, and 8 million disabled workers and their families. (Social Security Administration)

Uphold this “Covenant for the Common Good”. As Jim Wallis says, “Social Security is an expression of national values.”
