Kerry Delivers the Democratic Hispanic Radio Address
John Kerry Delivers the Democratic Hispanic Radio Address Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Social Security Act
August 13th, 2005

John Kerry delivered the Democratic Hispanic Radio Address today, marking tomorrow as the 70th anniversary of the Social Security Act being signed into law.

The following is the translation of this week’s Democratic Hispanic Radio Address delivered by Senator John Kerry.

“Hello, this is Senator John Kerry from Massachusetts.

This Sunday – August 14th – marks the 70th anniversary of the day the Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Social Security has been called the most successful government program in the world because it lifted millions of seniors out of poverty.

Hispanics are less likely to have additional sources of retirement income, and therefore after a lifetime of hard work rely on Social Security to a greater extent. Without Social Security, 56 percent of Hispanics would live in poverty.

As the Ranking Member of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee I am deeply concerned about the detrimental effect that President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security would have on Hispanic small businesses.

1. Kerry's quotes
"Hispanics are less likely to have additional sources of retirement income and therefore, after a lifetime of hard work, rely on Social Security to a greater extent," Kerry said.

"But the president continues to go around the country promoting a Social Security proposal that will drag America's small businesses and their employees backward."

2. Thanks for posting the link!
I don't speak Spanish, but he sounded good to me! I'm sure that with the growing Hispanic population in the US, it will become increasingly more important for presidential candidates to be able to communicate in Spanish. Lucky for us, our guy has a head start!

Of course that's in the future - right now the ability to communicate in English is apparently not even a requirement for the job.

3. It's interesting
That they had Kerry do the Spanish language speech, and Senator Salazar (who is Hispanic) do the English-language version.

"Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., spoke in a separate, English-language radio address of the program's unbroken record of paying promised benefits to retirees and people with disabilities."

4. It would be fascinating to know how that came about.
I would assume that Kerry must have voluteered to do the Spanish one. I wonder what the hispanic reaction was. The message was nicely designed to address issues that affect everyone, rather than pandering on special issues.

6. You know, until last year, I had forgotten all this stuff
It just sort of never came up. (Or I wasn't paying attention.) I had forgotten about Kerry being multi-lingual. I had forgotten or just gotten used to a lot. Shame on me.

I re-remembered some of this stuff from hearing about it from out-of-state folks last year. (I would read something and then go "Oh yeah, I forgot about that.") That's one of the reasons I read this group, people here remind me that we have a pretty good Senator. (Which according to the unwritten code of being a New Englander, we can't brag about because it's not very New Englandy. I just can't do it.)

Hey Rox, do you see this as a regional trait? We are incapable of bragging because it's just not done and if you brag THEY might notice and then what the hell would happen if certain people knew you thought highly of them? (That is so not done. People must work hard for little recognition and be greatful for the chance to do so and praise will be given only when absolutely necessary so as not to engender a swelled up head.) We are a screwed up region of the country, you know that.
