After abut the third question, one of the people I was watching it with said "Wow, there's no way they're going to be able to spin this as a Bush win". Kerry was near perfect.
Bush appeared to be totally losing it and so much of his nasty personality showed. I really wonder if there would have been anything, however ridiculous, he could have done that would have caused him to lose the voters clinging to him. Did his mother never tell him to stand up straight? (or still, for that matter) Kerry stood up straight - making himself look even taller.
Kerry sounded and looked Presidential. From the polls, he did regain many of the people he lost due to all the negative advertising, the hate filled convention and the strategically timed terror alerts. (Those alerts in addition to reminding people about terror, must have cost the big cities an enormous amount of money.)
This picture does capture how I remember the debates, except Bush's expression is too relaxed, friendly and normal there. In fact, at first glance, he looks like a little boy dressed up as his dad pretending to do his job.
