Local Democrats remain committed to cause
NEWARK -- The national attention, massive crowds, security and campaign signs are long gone from Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's visit here one year ago.
The campaign, which stopped here on Sept. 3, did not end in victory, but apparently left its mark on the Democratic Party in Newark and in Republican-dominated Licking County.
The Licking County Democratic Club, which had been virtually dormant for years, sprung to life during the campaign and boasts more than 200 members today.
Andrea Eastman, of Granville, a lifelong Democrat not previously involved with the party, joined the club during last year's campaign and was elected club president in January.
"Last fall, it was very intense and I agreed to help answer telephones in the Democratic office, and one of the first days was when the Kerry advance team came, and everything changed," Eastman said.
"We've been doing a lot of community service to demonstrate to the community we walk our talk and want to help people year-round, not just during election time."
The club has been involved with blood drives, trash pickups along highways, donations to the 211th Maintenance Company of the Ohio National Guard, and several park cleanups.
"We're not going away," Eastman said. "We have a full slate of candidates for Newark City Council, which hasn't happened for a very long time. I think that shows something.". . .
