who did you support in past Presidential Elections ?

first, can you all tell whether you always supported Kerry including from the Primary or how/when you came to support him?

and then can you tell who you supported in past elections in the primary and general elections.

2000 was the first time i was able to vote in a Presidential election and I felt the same towards Gore and Bradley or didn't strongly prefer one over the other. i kind of leaned Gore just based on him being part of the Clinton administration but overall i pretty much felt the same about them. so i ended up voting in the Republican Primary for McCain but only because i hated Bush. i would have voted for Gore(or Bradley) even if mccain had been the Republican nominee.

i wanted Gore to pick Kerry for vp but we saw how that turned out. i didn't have a depressed type of feeling though. i was always behind Gore and whoever he picked.

and then for 2004 i always leaned Kerry but wanted to check out other candidates. but i always came back to Kerry as the one i liked best.

i wonder who i would have supported in 1992. i was about 13 and wasn't paying much attention. i did come to love Clinton though,especially as i got older. i remember when he became the democratic nominee i just saw him as someone different , someone younger compared to reagan and pappy bush who were the only presidents i could remember in my life. i just thought he was cool.

1. Well, I was 14 going on 15 in 2000

So I didn't pay attention to primaries. I supported Gore since I was raised a good Democrat :) However, I didn't realize Bush would be so awful. I just thought he was a dumbshit, not a dangerous dumbshit. I even made a joke that he would probably start a war. Ugh.

1980: Worked for Kennedy in the primary
Voted for Carter in the GE

1984: Voted for Mondale, but was not inspired
Again, voted for Mondale in the GE

1988: Voted for Dukakis, (2nd MA candidate) (Loved Jesse)
Voted for Dukakis in the GE

1992: Voted for Tsongas in the primary (hmm, I'm sensing a pattern here)
Voted for Clinton

1996: Clinton
Clinton

2000: I voted Gore, my hubby voted and contributed to Bradley
Gore in the GE

2004: Kerry (4 out of eight primaries I voted for a homeboy!)

First I voted Republican (not too into politics but voted the way my parents had voted: Nixon, Ford, Reagan.

Then in 1992--Clinton
1996--Clinton

2000--Gore
2004--Kerry in the Wisconsin primary, Kerry/Edward in Nov.
(The very first time I ever did any more than vote in an election--I donated money, I canvassed, I phoned, I attended every rally I could, I put stickers on my car, pins on my shirts, was a ward captain and attended their meetings, etc.!) I contributed to the Kerry blog from April until November, always positive, always talking up Kerry/Edwards. I made sure my immediate family (husband and kids voted Kerry, although that was an easy assignment).

So I hope that makes amends for voting Republican those early years!

Let me just add an explanation;
I'm not a US citizen (yet), but have been a permanent resident since '86.
I grew up in Germany, but my husband is an American. Although I knew about US politics as a teenager back home, it was only enough to know that 'we' - as in my family - always rooted for the Dems. (my family are staunch social democrats).

I only actively followed, and worked for a nominee after the 2000 fiasco. Hence my joining DU, as well. I always liked John Kerry and knew alot about him, being one of his constituents here in Mass.
I began supporting his nomiation way back in '02, right after the mid term elections and the questionable GOP pick-ups. (see Romney. another exit poll 'discrepancy)
My husband and I volunteered our hearts out both in the primaries and the general up in New Hampshire, and I don't regret it for one moment.
Yes, I believe they stole it again this time, too. I distinctly remember telling my coworkers that the only way bush was going to win this time was by stealing it again. I knew he had when he called the press conference at 5 pm on the second.
Is it too late for John Kerry to be inaugurated as the rightful person to win office? Probably yes.
Will I fight for him if he decides to run again in 08? Absolutely!
As to my citizenship; I told JK that, if he won, I would start the paperwork to be a citizen. Well, I guess I can wait another 4 years if I have to :-)

9. I've been a Dem since I was seven

I got into election 2000, though I was turning 16 and couldn't vote. Thought Bush was an abominable dumbass, but didn't realize how odious he'd be.

2004 was my first election. I am ashamed to say I was a lazy Democrat in the primaries and was taken in by Dean's anti-war rhetoric, and so rooted for him. After his defeat, I didn't pay attention again until the DNC (I know, how awful), where I first began to feel some stirrings for John Kerry. A few days of study later, I was hooked on John. I regret not becoming his fan sooner. I am a perfect example of what an absymal FAILURE his early campaign managers were, because if I'd known ANYTHING at all about him early on, I definitely would've pulled for him from the get go. He's seriously like my perfect man, let alone my perfect politician.

10. Been trying to remember

I heard Carter first on the radio when I was living in Mississippi. Yep, I lived there. :scared: I was sooooo ready for somebody who promised to tell the truth. In 1980, I don't think I voted in the primaries. But I'm always ready for a Kennedy. I remember thinking it would be awesome to have him for President, but worrying somebody would kill him too. I never seriously thought we'd toss a sitting President though, and I still liked Carter anyway. I couldn't believe how many people were buying into Reagan, I lived in California under Reagan. Before and after Mississippi. Was a nice state until Reagan. I remember voting in the primaries for Jesse Jackson and I think Clinton. I always liked Al Gore, I don't remember what turned me off to Bradley. But I've been waiting for John Kerry to run since I can remember paying any sort of attention to politics. I guess I've had a wee crush on him since he gave his testimony back in '71! The idealism of a 14 year old girl I guess!

About Kerry. I have always been "Kerry Krazy" ever since I was 16 and I got my daughter hooked when she was young around seven or eight. We have always kept up with Kerry as much as possible but I must say it was alot easier once I got a computer and internet. Me and her both enjoy talking to people from Massachusetts. But we both were waiting for the day he would run for president. I remember my daughter getting mad because Gore didn't pick him as VP. She is comical anyway.

I could not even believe Gore picked Liebermann. I remember my mother liked him though, his "moral values". :eyes: No, she's not a prude so I don't even know where that came from. Kerry couldn't be VP then because he was a womanizer; now he's the dullest man since Coolidge. 24. I supported John Kerry way back in the 90's. Can't remember

the first time I saw him on TV, but I noted how articulate he was and how practical he was. I thought then that I would love to see him as President. You can imagine how excited I was to see him get the nomination. And to win too!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to bed thinking he was going to win and I'd learn of it early on Nov.3...well, it was already the 3rd when I finally went to be. Needless to say we were all disappointed to hear the dumbass was declared the winner.

I'm still depressed over this. :-( :-(

25. I've always voted for Democrats since '63 except the one

colossal mistake of voting for Nixon. Thankfully, he resigned. I only voted for him at the advice of someone I was dating. Both were huge mistakes!

First vote was for McGovern - voted absentee from college. I was thrilled to cast that ballot!

Then, Carter, John Anderson, Mondale, Dukakis, Clinton, Clinton, Gore, and...sigh...Kerry.

The only winning candidate, you'll note, is Clinton, of whom I was not all that fond. I preferred Bradley to Gore in 2000.

I was the most proud and happy to vote for Kerry, of all the votes I've cast.

actually, it was a vote in my highschool history class - Nixon won 17 - 3. I sure got a lot of shit for that!

An interesting story - in 1976 I hiked (most of) the Appalachian Trail. People used to leave notebooks in the lean-tos for other hikers to sign in and leave messages - in one of the early ones past Springer Mt. (the trailhead) there was a message from the year before - something along the lines of "Rosilyn and I hiked up here for a lovely fall day off on my presidential campaign" then some more stuff I don't remember. It was signed "Keep the Faith, Jimmy Carter". To this day I wonder if it was for real. It seemed authentic - this was still at a point in the campaign where nobody really even knew who he was.

The only two candidates I've supported through the primaries and general elections were Bill Clinton and John Kerry. I remembered Kerry from the Vietnam war protests and I knew he was one of the most liberal members of the Senate. He was the obvious choice.
