My blog, on Kerry, "Common Cause"
I really liked that phrase, "common cause". I think that's something we can build a platform on, yes??? I was thinking we could be ready with this after the "blistering critique" the AP wrote about wears off. Thoughts?

What’s not to love about the blistering attacks on the “Katrina Administration“, scheduled to be delivered to Brown later today. Full Text So many great lines, and who didn’t stand up and cheer when they read the “Brownie” rant!!!

I hope we don’t lose sight of the rest of this speech though; because ultimately, the vision is more important than the sizzle. Senator Kerry promises to “paint our own picture” of America in future speeches, and call on all Americans to become “allies united in common cause”.

“It’s time we framed every question - every issue -- not in terms of what’s in it for ‘me,’ but what’s in it for all of us?

And when you ask that simple question - what’s in it for all of us? - the direction not taken in America could not be more clear or compelling.

Instead of allowing a few oil companies to drill their way to windfall profits, it means an America that understands we can’t drill our way to energy independence, we have to invent our way there together.

Instead of making a mockery of the words No Child Left Behind when China and India are graduating tens of thousands more engineers and PhDs than we are, it means an America where college education is affordable and accessible for every child willing to work for it.

Instead of tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, it means an America that makes smart investments in your future like funding the science and research and development that will assure American technological leadership.

Instead of allowing lobbyists to rewrite our environmental laws, it means an America where lakes and rivers and streams are clean enough that when a family takes the kids fishing, it’s actually safe to eat the fish they catch.

Instead of letting a few ideologues get in the way of progress that can make us a stronger and healthier society, it means an America where the biology students here today will do the groundbreaking stem cell research tomorrow.”

This is great stuff, and like Senator Kerry, “I still believe America’s destiny is to become a living testament to what free human beings can accomplish by acting in unity.”

1. Sandy, great job
You underline lines I had missed because I read the speech too quickly.
These few lines are so true.

3. I caught a replay of the Puffy McMoonface daily grilling
and Puffy was asked about the harsh remarks that Sen. Kerry had made. Puffy regurgitated the Admin spin that others are criticizing, we are doing. (This is weak and only works if the press rolls over and shows some belly. I think not.)

Sen. Kerry is both speaking his mind and playing to his base, the base of the Democratic Party. This base was outraged, horrified and deeply distirbed by the failure of the federal government to do their damn jobs and get in and deliver help to Americans who needed it. Sen. Kerry put words to what a lot of Democrats felt when we saw people on the TV screen lined up and screaming, "Help us!" He delivered a great 'laundry list' of everything these smug, self-righteous bastards in the White House have done to make matters worse and to embarrass this great nation both at home and abroad. Bravo Senator, bravo.

Sen. Kerry also pointed out that it doens't have to be this way. There are things that we need to do in order to become a better nation. These are the same things that he has been saying all year. That hasn't changed. But the beginning of this speech, the wicked whacking that he delivered to the Bush Admin is the logical continuation of what he started in his concession speech. Sen. Kerry, in that speech, gave Bush time to do some things right and bring the country together. That's what statesmen do, they give the benefit of the doubt to the 'winner' of the race and try to unify the country.

Bush is unable, unwilling and too incompetent to do this. So, Sen. Kerry is stepping up to the plate and telling him, in no uncertain terms that he is a failure and that his policies have all contributed to making a natural disaster worse. Play time is over, the time for unity and for bringing the country together after a very divisive election is over. These dangerous people must be opposed with everything we've got. They care nothing for unity, they care nothing for the country and they are using a horrible tragedy to further enrich their corporate buddies and to put the failed conservative policies that contributed to the aftermath of the disaster even further into play.

As Sen. Kerry said in his August speech to the DLCC, "We don't need two republican parties." He is so right. We need a strong Democratic Party to oppose these bastards and remind America that there is a better way.
