The Portuguese American Women's Association recognized Teresa Heinz Kerry as its Woman of the Year for 2005 during a banquet yesterday at the Providence Biltmore.
Kerry, the wife of U.S. Senator and 2004 presidential candidate John F. Kerry, is "the epitome of the strength and independent spirit of the ideal Portuguese American woman in today's multicultural American society," the association said in a news release.
Kerry was born in the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique.
The association also honored state Treasurer Paul J. Tavares with a Lifetime of Exemplary Service award, and Dolores Almeida Seabra, cofounder of the Seabra Group, an importer and distributor of Portuguese products, with a Heritage Award.
