this person also claims to be a Dean supporter yet he attacks Kerry for things like supporting NAFTA or coming from a family with wealth even though his own parents weren't wealthy.

2. A Dean supporter attacking Kerry for supporting NAFTA and coming
from a well to do background. Y'all try to help me from laughing because the then Governor Dean was a big proponent of NAFTA, and Dick Gephardt who many Dean supporters loathe was the biggest champion in the house against it and Dean grew up way more wealthy than Kerry, Dean's father was a wealthy businessman and Kerry while not poor was far from rich, he was a diplomat's kid. He had it good but he didn't grow up extremely rich. Dean supporters also attack Kerry for opposing gay marriage

what i can't stand
is people who bring up things in Kerry's past to attack him like the skull and bones thing or having priviledges like an aunt who paid for good schools but when you bring up the other side such as he also comes from a family on his father's side that not only wasn't rich but suffered greatly and his serving in war by volunteering himself they don't want to hear it.

5. The privileged thing is mind boggling to me because these people
claim they want a democratic party like that of FDR, umm FDR was a very wealthy man you guys. Yes, his father's side actually had family who were killed in the holocaust I think I read, his grandfathers siblings. I had family killed by the Germans in the war too, they weren't Jewish though, they were ethnic Slovenes.

7. Doesn't fit the pre-set story
Weird to be deflating the whole Brahmin thing again. There are no longer any Brahmins living in Boston. The so-called Brahmins died out or moved to horsey country years ago. At the time the Kerry's were moving in and out of MA, the Brahmins were able to sustain nice places on stereotypical Beacon Hill because the housing market was static. (Boston was at war with itself because of factionalism. The Irish and other aligned ethnics controlled their faction and wished a hearty 'fuck you' to the moneyed class. The moneyed class replied with a well-placed 'Fuck you' back and took the money away. So things changed only slowly because of the weird stalemate. Mutually assured destruction is not a good way to run a city. It did, however, produce some hilarious history, bizarre moments in urban planning and some wonderful stories. But it's not a good guide to policy.)

Kerry comes from the goo-goo side of MA history. (Definitely a goo-goo with a side of Cambridge liberal and a nice salad full of impressive egghead street cred. I liked it, I never thought he ever pretended to be otherwise.) He was earnestly trying to do his duty to country, so he enlisted. This seemed to be the right thing to do. Had he been born two years later, it might not have been 'the right thing to do.' Not granting this it's well-deserved applause (or at least a nod) is juvenile and a bad argument.

12. Teresa bought the Boston house
After they got married, right? I don't know where he lived before that, the stories about a couple of paid for apartments and living with friends is all I've read. He obviously had no money of his own, seems to me. But I imagine it would be hard to try to say "I'm not rich, really", when you got the education he got. Appearances and all. And who wants to be the poor guy when all your friends are rich anyway. Not me.

14. yeah, Teresa paid for it
he was also supported by other women he dated after his separation from his first wife and his first wife also kind of supported him .

i'm sure it's not something most men would admit to or want to talk about. but Kerry has been a bit more open or accepting of it these days.

all i have to say is good for him if other women like him that much to want to support him.

20. Not so much supported by other women
He had real trouble making ends meet. The very few 'scandals' that the Glob wrote about Kerry involved associations with rich male friends who paid for some meals, let him us a car, use a condo and such. Every pol has to learn that perception matters. Just because somebody is a friend and that you believe they are good guys noble and true doesn't mean that they can do even very minor favors for you. This probably sucks as the transgressions were very minor. (I really mean that. This is truly chickenshit stuff. Real scandal has some meat on it's bones and involves lots of money. This stuff never did.) Kerry did learn this lesson the hard way. (Being dragged through the pages of the Boston Glob is a hard way to learn something.) He learned, and got better.

22. I don't get why people even care about this...
It's a really really stupid gender thing...I hope the perception's changing, and I think it is. Not comparable on this level of wealth or even close, but I make a fair amount more than my (male) partner does. Who gives a shit?

Hell, women are still encouraged to "marry up." "It's just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor one," moms say. (Not true in my experience but then I don't meet that many rich men.) If it's acceptable for a woman to look at a man's wallet as a factor, why not the reverse? I think it's equally tawdry for both, frankly, but you know, whatever gets you through the night.

23. I think it's inane too
And honestly, from what I know of John's personality, I doubt he thinks, "Damn, I need to find me a rich woman to support my extravagent lifestyle." I'd like to think that, were he single and looking, he wouldn't use wealth as a litmus test for a potential partner. He just does NOT seem that shallow to me. If Teresa were a flake, I might question his motives, but she's a strong, smart, independent, capable woman, and from what I can see, his attraction to her has nothing to do with her inheritance.

24. after seeing and hearing Teresa i was even more impressed with Kerry
she was so amazing when i saw her on tv. there is something about her where she just comes across as very caring . it might have to do with the fact that she has raised 3 sons. but she has a certain concern for others and a thoughfulness. she is the type where you can just go up to her and if you ask for a hug she would happily give it to you.

you should see how people of all ages, backgrounds get along with her. an older ww2 veteran, a college kid, a young child, someone who needs help with jobs or paying for health care etc. she can easily talk about just any subject with anyone.

i just wish the people were able to see more of her during the campaign. when they see her they love her and she is nothing like the person the media whores made her out to be.

but as i say, you see her and you think John Kerry must really be something if this amazing and incredible woman married him.

17. Long story.
Kerry's painful divorce resulted in court-ordered child support payments that bit deeply into the Senatorial salary. Now, our esteemed Senator does like living well. Always has. Factor in the costs of all the extra trips back to the district (you get comped for a few, but you have to pay for the rest yourself) child-support, paying for two residences (DC & Boston) and living expenses. Didn't leave a whole lot of money left over. (Explains why Kerry sort of has a rep for frugality. I am serious. He still has that '84 shitbox of a car. He tends to wear out clothes rather than just buy a lot of new stuff. These habits are formed over a lifetime.)

The Glob made a big deal out of the 'living in friends houses' era. (This is the major scandal the Glob found. He had to bunk in with friends. As scandals go, it ain't up there with Tom DeLay type stuff. It's pretty chickenshit.) Yeah, it happened. The late '80's and early '90's spawned a veritable cottage industry of jokesters who made up great 'Mass loves homeless vets, look one is our Senator,' jokes. I used to have the canonical list of Kerry jokes, and there were a lot of these in there. Poor guy.

Kerry has a pre-nup with THK. (Who wouldn't. She has grown children and their interests needed to be protected.) He owns one half of the Beacon Hill house. (Worth about 6.5 mil.) It is this half an interest that got mortgaged to provide money for the primaries before Iowa. A gutsy move that friends said, don't do, you are pissing away your daughters inheritance. Did it anyway and got all money back sometime last spring. THK is an enormously rich woman. Kerry has access to the houses and stuff, but his fortune is mainly in that house.

Oh that's funny. Not to true homeless vets, but funny all the same. I knew the basics of what you posted, but not the frugality stuff. It kind of fits with him politically though. Don't sweat the small stuff, fight like hell for what's really important.

27. What Makes Me Madder Than Hell
Is these assholes that scream about him being so damn rich all the time don't even realize that there is a pre-nup they all just assume that because he is married to Teresa that he is major rich and set for life. Hell he doesn't get a damn penny of that money that was done to make sure her sons inheritance was there and nobody including Kerry could touch it if something happen to her. Now I'm sure he might receive her half of the home if he received anything then again he probably don't get that either. That is probably set up to where John would live there until he passed away and then it would have to be sold and his daughters received his half and her sons would receive her half. Who knows.

And John never gets credit for working his ass off and going through the hell he has all these years to fight for the people of Massachusetts and other Americans in this country and the country itself. This man has been put through hell ever since remember. It is so damn ridiculous what this man has been put through and most of it totally uncalled for. Hell not many men would do a job in Washington with the workload that he had and did it very well I might add and travel every Thurs or Fri home to Boston and rush to their daughters soccer games. Regardless of how big the workload or how hard the work he was always a father first. He even called his daughters all the time to check on their homework and just to see how their day went.

Kerry struggled to make ends meet until he married Teresa. But hell look what the man was trying to keep up, look what all he had to pay out, hell friends of his will tell you there were times they bought dinner for him because he was so damn broke. But yet assholes want to tell a bunch of damn lies about the man and have others believe he is major fuckin rich. BULLSHIT! These people need to get a damn life and learn the damn truth about who the hell they are talking about. Because if they knew the damn truth I would be willing to bet they would be more like the rest of us and respect the man. But the problem is these assholes don't want to learn or know the truth. It might crush their damn ego and they would have to eat and spoon feed themselves their own words.

And I have never in my life seen a more jealous and vengeful bunch of assholes as I have seen at DU. What is the big fuckin deal that a man who has worked all his damn life for others and his country, struggled and went through hell doing it, finally meets a woman he truly cares about and marries her, and finally can live in peace and have happiness, and not have to struggle from one day to the next, and just enjoy life. What is the big fuckin deal in that. Is he not ever suppose to be happy or have a life or anything else for that matter because he works for the people of Massachusetts, other Americans for that matter, and his country? BULLSHIT! This man has work hard and struggled and been put through hell just to get where he is today and to be able to finally enjoy a little peace and happiness and people need to mind their own damn business and leave the man alone. If the assholes worried about their own life as much as they do his they might be enjoying the same thing he is.

This man has worked hard and deserves everything he has got and enjoys. And he sure as hell didn't marry Teresa for her money because if that was all he was after they wouldn't be married. Because he sure as hell won't inherit her money and estate she made sure of that with the pre-nup. He married her because he loves her and he is finally living the life he deserves. And you know he loves her when she has been known to refer widow as "my husband" and John as "John Kerry" and didn't add John's last name to hers right away. She doesn't do this anymore but she did for a long time and John dealt with it because he loved the woman. John is very happy with Teresa and both I feel love each other very much but for people to begrudge the man a little happiness in life and constantly attack him with pure bullshit lies is shameful and ridiculous!

11. I think a divisive mole
I highly doubt a true Dean supporter would have stayed away until now. And they would have had more than talking points that really do sound like they're straight from Karl Rove. Think about it, trade and aristocrat. That's the right's attack on Kerry, not Deaniacs.

The attack on BLM was the final straw. What a jerk.

10. I Didn't Post Anything
I refuse to give these illiterate dumbasses the time of day! I refuse to kick post where these dumbasses continue their freeper talking points throughout the whole damn thing. This illiterate dumbasses can kiss my and Kerry's liberal ass! These illiterate dumbasses and yes they are illiterate dumbasses that are jealous of a man who has worked his ass off to get where he is today and continue to talk and sound like a bunch of repukes need to get what little brain they have left out of their ass so the shit goes in the toilet instead of making a U-turn and coming out there mouth. Clearly these people have major problems and need to get a life before they end up being directed to the nearest mental ward because everyday they become a bigger danger to themselves and society. These people are starting to become a embarrassment to the party and the hell of it is their opinions are as useless as tits on a boar hog and all they do is stink up the place spewing nothing but pure shit out of their mouths.

here's a good arguing point: Kerry used to work in the summers on a loading dock in Somerville (we natives refer to it somewhat affectionately as "Slummerville", so you get the idea.) He was loading and unloading trucks, for god's sake. Ah, the life of the idle rich...

26. I think it was mentioned in that
New Republic article I'm having trouble locating. It's on my computer at work, I believe - I'll look tomorrow. It went into his early history in great depth, and pretty sympathetically, esp. for the New Republic.

I don't know how many of you were aware of this (my husband gets the magazine), but late last fall they did an endorsement issue for the primaries, with different people writing pieces about their candidate. Only major candidate without a piece? JK. I still haven't forgiven them.

But then, they endorsed Holy Joe, so I guess the laugh's on them.

there seems to be a refusal among some to accept that not everyone agrees with them and there ARE people who like certain people or things, or dislike certain people or things which may not be the same as them.

I had to log out to follow the thread, actually - I had put the poster you were arguing with on "ignore" just this last night...

On another thread today I had readied a response for a certain "crazy person from a peninsular southern state" - spent half an hour researching it even. Never bothered posting it - it just doesn't seem worth it.

I think I need to take a break from DU.
