Like it or not, they've got a lot of oil, and we need it (since we have an idiot for president who isn't holding industry to the fire for bringing down consumption, but I digress). And not just Iraq, but the whole region. We have to have that damned oil. And the region is where Wahabbism came from AND Israel, the only true democracy there, which we want to protect. If Turkey joins the EU some day, then the Middle East will become for Europe, our traditional allies, what Mexico is to us -- right on the border. There's the Persian Gulf, an extremely important area for commerce. I could go on and on. In the end, Vietnam falls under the sphere of influence of China, and they don't have any natural resources that we most desperately need. No, the only thing Vietnam had was "Communists", and we were so blinded in our need to defeat the Soviet Union that we failed to realize that we should have CONCENTRATED on the Soviet Union, not a minor battle over a country that wanted independence from non-stop colonialism. Is Vietnam all that we could hope for today? No. Freedom of speech is greatly restricted and there still are violations of human rights (given Abu Ghraib we can't complain about that anymore); but if China liberalized on those fronts, so will Vietnam. And, in the end, they're at peace and not making any trouble for the rest of the world. Webb is an idiot who will NOT let go of the fact that his time in Vietnam was all for nothing. JK was smart enough and honest enough to figure that out while he was still there. Given his dreams of being like JFK I, a WWII hero, this must have been painful for him, but that's just another example to his high quality of character. He's just not one who would stay bitter like Webb has chosen to do.
