GOP chairman to single out Kerry, Clinton

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – The head of the Republican Party, launching a broad indictment of the Democratic Party six months before midterm elections, charged today that the opposition can't even find an election-year slogan, let alone agree on a broad agenda.

In an address to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Tennessee, Ken Mehlman singled out party leaders and two potential 2008 presidential candidates — Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry — for criticism on a range of issues, from national security to the economy to judicial nominees.

"Not only can they not settle on an agenda, they can't even agree on a slogan," Mehlman said in remarks prepared for delivery. He then offered some suggestions, albeit critical ones.

"If they really want the American people to know what they are going to do, then how about, 'Together, Americans can pay more in taxes,' " he said. "Or, 'Together, we can retreat from the central front in the war on terror.' "

...

He argued that Clinton's solution to support U.S. troops in Iraq was higher taxes and poked fun at Kerry for joining in the unsuccessful challenge to Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito's nomination from a conference in Davos, Switzerland.

1. This actually smacks of despiration
The attacks on Hillary and Kerry, don't really carry any weight. I don't even understand what the Hillary one means. I think they've gotten all the mileage they can out of Davos. Kerry took a principled stand and as time goes on it will stand on its own. The issues raised on unitary President fit with those raised on the Patriot Act and wiretapping - the Republicans should worry that about the libertarian part of their base.

It may also seem strange that the party in control of everything which seems to have no rudder is saying the Democrats have no theme.

2. I was thinking the same thing! Same old tired lines and accusations!
Ha,Ha, is that all they have. Obviously, Kerry has hit a nerve, but to attempt to attack him with this old stuff, is just weak. It seems to add credence to the notion that Kerry has already been subjected to the worse accusations and they would have very little to attack him with if he were to run again.

3. all hat, no cattle
as JK would say.

If one of their own had tried a filibuster against great odds--why, it would have been the greatest, most courageous act ever!! These hypocrites have got to be transparent, even to the casual reader.

And what's this about a slogan? Is that what's important--advertising??

The RNC is overpaying this bozo. Taking pot-shots with his little pop-gun.

8. i saw that
it's disgusting. especially considering how reluctant they are to make the Abramoff scandal a Republican scandal.

and i'm very sure this was very intentional also.

10. We need to protest that headline
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 05:13 PM by karynnj
With Cunningham, Abramoff etc this is very misleading and abusive. Would they title an article on Dean criticizing Bush and Cheney as Republicans Indicted, Bush, Cheney targeted.

Updated to say I found a contact number and after bouncing around voice mail jail complained to a person - the title is inflamatory and misleading. An article that a Republican flack doesn't like Kerry or Clinton is hardly news - it clearly shouldn't be the lead story. The title does sound like a lead story that Dems are indicted and Kerry and Clinton are targeted certainly is bad.

He said he would report it - to help insure that he might I said I would Post the netscape number on a Democratic board if he didn't - though I really have to get off the computer. Number -866-541-8233

17. I've already complained to CNN and Netscape.
I haven't gone to the Associated Press because I've only seen the headline on the CNN "Breaking News" link at Netscape.

"Breaking News." A trifle pathetic, that, given that there's not much newsworthy in one party criticizing another at a partisan event! :eyes:

Then again, the fact that Mehlman looks like such a dolt in the photo is rather CHARMING, don't you think?

9. Mehlman needs to realize the party is more than just
"A Slogan"... But if he wants one how about "We're Not Going To Take It Anymore!"

Cindy was also one of the few Kerry supporters on DU during the Primary. she may still be although she doesn't post in here.

and saying that the GOP wants them because they will beat them easily (same usual trolls, but still).
