Wisteria and I went to the American Ireland Fund dinner tonight. Guest of honor - Jack Murtha. The dinner was lovely, very formal. Green tie and tux, gorgeous gowns, bling.
Bishop Wuerl gave the invocation. Very nice. He's quite a fixture in this town, and it was good to see him.
I spoke to Congressman Murtha a bit. Thanked him for his service and for speaking out.
Wisteria and I chased down every pol in the room. I had to talk with former Mayor Tom Murphy, as I had a teeny tiny crush on him when he first took office. He's a bit older now (I'm not), but still kinda cute. We talked about Ireland and my last name and lots of stuff. I really do like him. He's working in New Orleans now on reconstruction. There are 'problems'. Hmmm...
Bob O'Connor, the current mayor of Pittsburgh did not have near as much to say. Hello, thanks, bla...bla...bla... No real conversation.
Other minor celebs, but not anyone you guys would know.

PS: Did you know that Franco Harris has given money to Kerry as has Lynn Swann even though Swanny is a republican. Murtha is the congressman for the Johnstown area and thats where my mom's parents are from. I am going to the Burgh to look at Pitt as a possible transfer college sometime this summer.

Franco also campaigned like crazy for JK in 2004. I saw him everywhere. He's a really nice guy and a very committed Democrat.

Yeah I saw his newsmeat donations to John, he supported him before he got momentum. Swann gave money to Kerry back in 96 when he ran against Weld but attended the 2004 RNC. I saw an article that identifed Dan Rooney as a democrat too, his father was great friends with Tip O'Neil I read. I think it would be stupid if Swann is refered to as another dumb jock because Ive seen the man interviewed, I wouldnt vote for him but he is articulate and went to USC, and that is a tough school to get in to.

As much as I like that picture, I have to say that I would like to hear a little less about football in the upcoming gubernatorial election. If you know what I mean.

8. Yeah and Rendell is a football fan too

I havent read much on Swanny's campaign so far but from what Ive read he's been using less football metaphors than my jerk for a senator. I am glad Rendell kept his running mate, that lady Knoll because Rendell is an Eastern Pennsylvanian and she is from the Pittsburgh area. A lot of people in GD wanted him to pick Hoefel but although I like Hoefel this would have been a bad choice. Ticket balancing is key to win in many places, which is why Swann who will be considered a Western Pennsylvanian picked Chris Matthews' brother who represents a state district in Suburban Philly.

9. Yeah but football can bring trouble this year

I was reading that the Steelers are threatening to leave if the state doesn't help them buy a new stadium. So they are basically trying to extort money from Rendell's government in an election year. Sigh...what else is new, huh.

Heinz Field where the Steelers and Pitt Panthers play was built in 2001 and teams dont leave stadiums after 5 years, trust me. I don't think the Rooney family would do that to the state that said, everything Ive seen and read about them indicates that they're not that kind of people. Trust me the Steelers won't leave Pittsburgh especially if Dan Rooney still owns the team, his father bought the team back in 1933, I dont thikn he'd nove it now.

12. I'm jealous

Everything I read about Mr. Rooney and his family tells me that they are great people. Have you seen any of the Steelers History DVD? I own it and it seems that Art Rooney grew up near where Three Rivers was which is where my Nana grew up, Art was around the same age as my great uncle. The Rooneys are such good people, they had a large part in getting hte new Collective Bargaining Agreement passed. I think MH1 was thinking of the Penguins since a lot of the people who post on Steelers.com are from the area and are worried about hte Penguins situation. I wish the Orioles had an owner like Dan Rooney in all honesty.

I knew you were wrong because teams don't leave stadiums after five years and adding club seats. I dont even follow hockey but some of the folks over on Steelers.com have mentioned the trouble with the Penguins. Ive lost heart in baseball because of what it's become but football remains great to me because of how its structured and folks like the Rooneys. Ive seen reports that have the Penguins going ot Vegas or Hartford.
