So, Chimpy's poll numbers are in the mid-30's, yet McCain embraces him even tighter than before. (Ewwwww.) Is McCain just monumentally stupid, or does he know that Diebold already has this thing wrapped up for him? Does anyone else find these moves on his part strange, even for a Republican?

McCain continues to deepen ties to Bush camp

Arizona Sen. John McCain continues to deepen his ties to the Bush wing of the Republican Party as he mulls a presidential run in 2008. Those moves are also sparking more criticism of McCain from Democrats bracing for the 2008 White House contest.

McCain's national political action committee, Straight Talk America, earlier this month hired Terry Nelson as a senior adviser. Nelson served as national political director to the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004. McCain previously brought on board one of Bush's top campaign media consultants, Mark McKinnon.

McCain's push to secure GOP partisans for a 2008 run and his support for Bush has sparked criticism from the Democratic National Committee.

The DNC hit McCain earlier this year for not opposing Bush's preliminary approval of a deal letting a state-owned company from the United Arab Emirates to take over operations at some major U.S. seaports.

The DNC is also criticizing McCain for hiring Nelson. Democrats point to the fact that Nelson served as deputy chief of staff at the Republican National Committee at the same time former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is accused of illegally funneling money through various GOP organs.

1. Its mystifing to me but I dont see McCain winning a republican primary
I must admit I dont know any conservatives from the early primary/caucus states of New Hampshire and Iowa but the ones I went to school with weren't too big on McCain even the guy I knew who worked for McCain's office. They felt the same way about Chuck Hagel who I think if the republicans ran would be a tough candidate to beat because he's likable, has the war hero thing, and isn't so black and white on foreign policy.

2. I think there's something wrong with him.
Seriously. Maybe they promised him the moon, but still, after what was done to him by bush* et al, I find it beyond amazing that he would even consider working with this administration.
I think he might be nuts.

5. I heard someone say this week
(can't remember who) that this is McCain's wauy of being a maverick repug. When Chimpy's polls are in the toilet, McCain embraces him. It makes a twisted kind of sense to me.

7. I guess I can see the twisted logic in that ...
(even though I still think it's monumentally stupid) but what does that say about what kind of leader he would be? If he always has to go against the grain in order to maintain "maverick" status, how would anything ever get done?

I think he just ain't right in the head, myself. I don't know if the VC brainwashed him, but I sure as hell think the BC (Bush Cabal) has.

6. It's the "Bush wing"
The Bush diehards who still believe in Bush and will believe in Bush even beyond the bitter end. These are the people McCain has to have to win either the primaries or the GE, buddying up to them now won't hurt him in 2008. Most people don't even know he's doing it. After he wins them over, he'll swing back to the middle, just like Bush did in 2000. He won't even have to work that hard because alot of moderates already buy into the notion that he's a moderate. Makes perfect sense to me.

8. There are enough people out there praising him
(Imus, Tweety, to name a few) so he may think he's got it in the bag. I wish he'd realize that we 'get it'; he's sold his soul and most of us are not about to trust anything he says. Likewise for Lieberman.

11. Here is why I think McKain is sucking up to GWB.
I think that he beleives Dick Cheney will be replaced within the next 3 years. Either illness or Crookedness. He will probably be named Vice President, which will make it a lot easier to run for President.

12. I think that's highly credible
I think McCain will do or say anything in order to try and get the Wingnuts on his side. It sounds to me like a 'throw Cheney under the bus' scenario that would put McCain in the VP's spot is a plausible thing. It would help * out, it would help McCain out and it would screw the American people. Sounds like something that would warm the cockles of a wingnut's heart.
