As the arguments for invading Iraq gained momentum during 2002, it was very difficult for Democratic leaders to question the direction the Administration and its congressional allies were taking the country. First, the 9/11 attacks had created a climate of fear. Second, the Administration was controlling the debate, and in many instances the raw intelligence needed to conduct a proper debate, both in the media and in the Congress. Third, Democrats themselves were vulnerable to attack if they questioned the propriety of yielding certain powers to the President to conduct the war. This vulnerability was accentuated by the Party’s association with anti-Vietnam War protesters and the many votes against the first Gulf War.

By invading Iraq, our country lost an historic, post – 9/11 opportunity to galvanize much of the world on our side of the terrorism issue. It is not too late for the Democrats to make this distinction, and others, between unilateral wars designed to export ideology at the point of a gun – a policy more reminiscent of the Soviet Union than the United States – and wars clearly designed to protect our interests, such as the campaigns against international terrorism.

Only when the Democrats get smart enough and bold enough to make these distinctions will they regain their old majorities. And quite frankly, if John Kerry had made these distinctions in 2004, I believe he would have won the election.

but it will be with reluctance. Miller seems like a good guy, I read how he got his start in politics, working on the RFK campaign and he's a self made guy from the part of the country I may be transfering to, Pittsburgh. I think he could be good but he's not getting a lot of press.

I really don't know if I could. My husband was in the Navy when Webb was Secretary of the Navy, and he did not like him at all. He was one of the reasons he retired right at 20 years.

Personal experience goes both ways that said, our local delegate for the house of delegates was unchallenged this year, Tom Rust didn't need my vote but I voted for him anyway and would have done so even if he had an opponent because Rust is a maverick first off, second off he was the mayor of my town, and thirdly when I used to go to football games at the high school sometimes he would come and he was always friendly. One time my brother asked him about tickets or something and he was friendly about it and my brother didnt even realize he was the mayor. He was one of those republicans that Governor Warner worked well with and Kaine is now too. My young dems sponsor liked him a lot too.

Also, what part of "Wrong war, ...." that Kerry said so many times I won't even type it all. Maybe if he didn't have a Republican Naval official lying about his honorable protests against another wrong war that was not for our security, he might have done better.

Beachmom? Kleeb? Who else? This guy is clearly an idiot. While I would prefer we get a little tighter anti-war message, I think this guy might need to get a clue as to the views of the party he claims to be a part of. We're anti-Vietnam War. Period. We had an opportunity to prevent all of this current Iraq mess, if Reagan and Rummy had just taken the path Democrats wanted to take in the late 80's. Instead we made Saddam our ally and sold him the WMD we refused to sanction him over when he killed people with it. Perhaps that's the REAL reason Poppy didn't want to go all the way to Baghdad, he knew we really would have faced a chemical war then. These converted Reaganites really make me nervous, they clearly haven't learned a thing. Not to mention this one obviously paid NO attention to JK or he would have heard him make the distinction against unilateral wars and going to the UN to turn over a new leaf.

I must admit I don't know much about Vietnam. He makes me nervous too and it upsets me that he's getting so much press coverage while Miller isn't getting any, but I do take solace in this fact that he's the favorite of the liberal blogs and that could mean that most Virginian Democrats think differently, I was told that Kos's record with election is a whomping 0-17. I think its amazing that Webb thinks Vietnam was about international terrorism, even I know that, it was about containment at first and then it became a clusterfuck. I think Webb is definely wrong about Vietnam, many many people were against it and not all of them were student radicals, my dad has told me that his father a lifelong civil servant with the NLRB turned against the war.

Harris Miller is losing the dailykos battle. I don't know if that matters or not, but VA folks who don't want to see Webb as your candidate, might want to keep an eye out over there, and let people know the real deal. (I hope there's some good to say about Miller.)

10. I actually think him losing the Kos battle may not be a bad thing

I don't think Kos represents democrats, the way I see it, most Americans for that matter Virginians get their news the old fashion way, the newspaper, the TV, and word of mouth. I admit I dont know much about Miller but I do like the guy from what I know.
