Ed Schultz “Who Would Be Against the Democrats Plan”

As I reported earlier today, Democratic leaders unveiled their National Security plan today, and in my book, it’s a darn good one. I caught a bit of the Ed Schultz Show earlier today and Senator Dick Durbin was on talking about the plan. It was a great interview and Ed ticked off the list of what’s in the plan and made the point - “Who would be against this!”

Tomorrow, John Kerry will be on the Ed Schultz Show sharing his views on the Democrats new National Security plan. As I pointed out here earlier today, the new plan from the Democratic leaders includes many positions that were put forward “previously by the Democrats and by their 2004 presidential nominee, Senator John Kerry.”

It was a two-fer today, and I can't wait for tomorrow--JK!

So did the unveiling of the plan get on TV at all? Olbermann said all the cable news networks covered * who was up at the same time--a coincidence? I think not!!

2. why does Kerry do these radio shows ?

i know it's kind of a stupid question. but Schultz and Imus ? when he does it , is he just targeting political and partisan audiences ?

of course the viewers of the Sunday morning shows are mostly partisan types also.

i'm assuming Kerry himself chooses to do these shows instead of meet the press and some other things. i do understand because Russert and others often just want to play word games rather than any real discussion of the issues.

i can understand Schultz even though i don't listen to him. but i wish Kerry would stop going on Imus. i really can't stand the asshole. and nobody really listens to him anyways.

3. It's good exposure for him to be on Ed Schultz

He has one of the largest liberal talk radio audiences and Ed loves JK.

4. Illegal Immigration

Where does he stand: Compairing the protests to what he saw in the '60's.

Question: Where do you stand Sen?

Kerry: Common sense. Not for illegal immigration. (Well, duh, who is.)
It has gone on until it is a problem with resentment on one side and such.
People come here to work and for opportunity.
It's illegal to hire people. (etc. The common sense stuff.)
How many Repub cons (all of em) hire and despise illegal workers them (playing politics.)

We do need reform. But, on the other hand, we do have 11 million people here who have settled in.
How do you police and apply the laws to the border situation. There is no amnesty that will have people follow a path that will result in possible citizenship. (This is the reasonable argument. See the Judiciary comm hearing from Monday, excerpt Graham.)

5. Hmmm, more interesting.

I liked this response. He is questioning those who hire the immigrant workers and then protest illegals. Nice.

National security: Yeah, it is his stuff from '04. (Sigh!)

War against Al Qaeda is the number one priority not what bozo and his dancing clowns did. (I paraphrased, can you tell?)

7. Emphasizing illegal hiring. Good on him.

Talked about all the other important points too (sounded like he listened to Reich, too). As often happens - it seemed like JK is reading my mind on this one. Just reminded again why I like him so much.

10. It is the common sense approach.

As someone else wrote in another thread

11 million people can't be repatriated out of the country. It's just not going to happen.
We can't reward illegal behavior.
We have to hold the people who do the hiring and then turn around and complain about the illegal immigrants coming into the country accountable. They are hypocrites.
We have to face the problem dead-on and not hide behind phoney promises and pandering.

I liked it. He is pretty squarely behind the Kennedy-McCain bill. It's not a perfect solution because there are no perfect solutions. There cannot be any blanket amnesties. Yet there has to be a realistic way to deal with this and deal with the fact that people come here. (Boy, does that ever lead to a host of reforms in foreign policy and in trade agreements and so forth.)

11. Ed played a tape of Reagan

talking about the blanket amnesty he did enact...what a far cry from today's RW-ers who seem to want to let all the aliens just die--either from trying to cross the border, or from lack of help once they're here.
Shows just how far we've drifted to the right.

6. Bush really screwed up. (Oh, everything.)

They did discuss the need for a military bill of rights. (It is sad that has to happen.)

BTW, great, great interview. Franken's was okay, this is very meaty.

something about Schultz, he just hits the topics and lets JK go at it. Very good interview. I'm going to e-mail Ed and let him know how much I appreciate his style.

12. I like Ed.

I was kind of indifferent/suspicious of him at first, but he's really grown on me. He's a reliable lefty who tells it like it is, and thinks in terms of practical solutions, not unrealistic ideals.

I think that's what the problem is between Dems who differ on this issue: there is the ideal, and then there is the practical, do-able solution that we actually can do. I come down on the side of doing what's do-able with what we've got to work with.

The Sensenbrenner solution is absolutely horrible--and I hope enough people are going to be mad enough at that bugger to kick him out of our district next fall!!

13. Ginny & Fedup: I do think Kerry is great on Big Eddie's Show

I can't remember the last interview that Sen. Kerry did with Al Franken. (If he ever did any.) I thought I had read somewhere that the two had met before on a few occasions, and that 3 hour long 'trial' that Will Pitt wrote about took place in Al's place in NYC. They must have talked.

Yet, the interview with Al was a bit awkward and took a while to get going. (I just sensed a little disconnect because it was unfamiliar ground for both, I guess.) It seems that the interviews I've heard on Ed Schultz have just flowed. Big Eddie asks a question and then gives the good Senator a chance to fully answer it. They seem to be on the same wavelength.

Isn't it funny that the guy who is supposedly aloof and can't connect with 'regular people' does better on the more 'regular guy' show than on the show hosted by the 'intellectual.'

14. yup, things went more smoothly on Ed's show

I noticed, though, that there was some difficulty with JK and Al hearing each other--did you sense that? Because some of the comments/funny asides weren't responded to. I remember it as being Al not hearing JK--but I'd have to go back and listen again to be sure.

And I think Al is a little nervous around someone as "VIP" as JK--and tightens up and can't be as funny or relaxed. Ed seems to be more at ease--a matter of personal temperament I guess--and his thing is not all about being funny, just about doing an informative show. JK can talk to any kind of interviewer, but probably prefers the laid back ones. I know I would!

I know JK talked to Franken on his show at least once before, probably during the later part of the campaign.
