9. The plain stupid part

Is that the Vatican has actually been reining in alot of activism for the poor in Latin American countries over the last years. While local Catholic Churches are engaged in organizing these protests, it's hardly at the order of the Vatican to gain Republican votes. They're probably freaking out at seeing all these poor Catholics in the US, totally screwing up their plan to "gentrify" the US Church. Geesh, what idiots.

I dont think the Vatican cares about the Republican Party getting support. Not all priests are goddamned right wingers like Charles Coughlin was. You have people like my grandparents' priest who is a great guy who doesnt believe in partisanism who tells people to consider all the issues at the voting box. He's a good guy, I aloways like hearing my grandmother's story about the sermons he gives. A priest with a sense of humor is a good priest in my opinion. I wish we had a good priest. I've wanted to go back to Mass at different points in time, but everything I hear about our priest seems to make it not a good idea for me to go. Ha at least your priest wasn't ass like my grandmother's first one at the Slovak Church back in Johnstown. I enjoy the stories. When I went to my other grandmother's memorial service at Georgestown earlier in the winter, the priest giving the ceremony was a younger guy and of good humor too.

13. We had a deacon for my dad

Sort of freaked me out because I had never heard of anybody except a priest officiating at things like funerals. But he was a very nice guy. Stories, my. I have 7 uncles. I bet we've got WAY different stories!! Like, do you have any where you took your childen to school and their teacher, the nun, told you about the time your dad locked your uncles in the coat closet?? Yeah, my cousin's got that one. lol.

14. I got some Catholic School stores mostly from my dad

The following is one of my favorite stories my dad told me as a kid. When he was in 7th grade at the school, the nuns decided to forbid the kids from eating their popsicles outside in the school yard so my dad forgot all about that much like me or my brother would have. So the sister confronts him about it and has him wait in teh office. He then escapes the school and goes to one of the local public elementary schools where two of friends went and tells them what happened. Later went and hide out in one of his friends tree houses. That was the beginning of the end for Catholic school for my old man, he's the only one in the family not to have graduated from Catholic high school. A side story to that is had my oldest uncle gone to the local public high school he would have been a classmate of none other than Paul Wellstone since Wellstone grew up in Arlington. I kind of envy my dad in many ways, he's much more social than I am and when he was my age he went to Mexico. I wish people here on the boards would be more tolerant of Catholics. They're a long and loyal part of the Democratic base. My family has been going Democratic ever since they got here.

Funny story about your dad. I think 3 of my uncles graduated. My dad says my grandfather gave up on one of them when he hauled him into school and he was out the back before my grandfather got out the front. They never got in any serious trouble though. In some ways it was easier for males back then. Seems like those kinds of antics didn't label a kid as a juvenile delinquent and it was easier for them to get a job without finishing high school. And easier to do things like take off to Mexico too.

and sees it in my brother and it worries him very much. Speaking of not finishing high school me and my mom are convinced that its highly possible my grandfather was a high school drop out which would be amazing considering that he was a foreman at a bricklaying site and he's pretty insightful too.

They are all 75 - 90. So I think they are more the age your grandpa would be, if I remember. They mostly had manual labor type jobs and did okay for themselves. My oldest uncle is the one who cracks me up most. He was a railroad engineer, and you'd have to be a pure socialist to be further left than him. I never really got that from him growing up, but holy moley listening to him lately, he'd compete with any of our DU lefty freepers. And don't get him started on Reagan, yikes!! So here's this old lefty, driving around in a brand new Cadillac!! Too funny.

Your brother will be okay. He's what, around 23 now?? One of these days he'll look at his life and realize he's going nowhere in a hurry. Most people do and with everything we know about addiction these days, it's alot easier for people to understand what's happening to them. When they're ready.

Actually my dad's father if he were still alive would be turning 93 year this year, my dad was the youngest of six and he was 36 when I was born so ipso facto my dad's parents werent of the so called greatest generation though his dad did try to enlist in the second world war wouldnt let him in because of his back. That reminds me that you bring up your uncle and Reagan. My dad's told me that in the late 70's I think it was 1979 they were out somewhere and my dad spotted a Reagan For President sticker on a car. I am sure you remember how many people at the time thought Reagan was unelectable because of his ultraconservative views so apaprently my dad laughed at it and my grandfather was like hey it could happen so don't get too excited. He died the winter before Jimmy Carter was beaten that year. A shame really because I think he knew that Reagan was going to do the people he tried to help his whole life through his deregulation. My dad's father grew up fortunate in a nice part of Pittsburgh but he had his eye out for the little guy and he was tolerant of all people. My dad's told me stories of how he got a smackdown from his dad for using racist language.

I must be confused.

My uncle was in the Coast Guard and then worked in San Francisco. I think he had one of those civilian necessity type deferments because he worked for the railroad. My aunt and his daughters, who were around 20 I guess, were Rosie the Riveters at a San Francisco shipyard. They did one of those war time propaganda stories with them, because they did all that plus bought war bonds because I had uncles in the navy and air corps too. So that's kind of cool. Of course, the same uncle who hightailed it out the back of the high school also likes to tell the story about "fire drills" when the WAV's were taking showers. Oy, what a family!!

But sadly, they aren't the most tolerant of people. Although that oldest lefty uncle, totally tolerant of ALL people. Sounds like him and your granddad would have been great friends. He came for my daughter's wedding and I had forgotten what that generation was like, always opening doors for women, that sort of thing. True gentlemen who knew what it meant to aspire to greatness.

That generation really is one of the best. I wish my generation were more like them. They're very selfless amd good people. My mom's dad surprised me with how relatively pro gay rights he is. Both him and my grandmother don't like the idea of gay marriage but are totally supportive of civil unions, so there goes that lefty freep myth that if you oppose gay marriage, you likely oppose civil unions too. I am gonna get ready to go to bed soon or get ready for classes soon by the way, I'll be on later in the afternoon or something like that.

23. I think it might be in reaction to the overall

increase in the last few week of sane people. Many of these were names are not the regulars. The Kerry war comments were asinine - the winner in terms of faulty logic was one who should be given the Karen Hughes logic award - the poster responding to Kerry agreeing that the IWR was the vote he would most want to take back and that he regretted it profoundly, claimed that it didn't mean he definitely wanted to take the vote back - as maybe there is NO vote (in 22 years as a Senator) that Kerry wants to take back, so it's simply the least liked of his votes.

That and all the people who now say we can't say he was against the war because he said his vote was wrong. (So apparently, Kerry saying the vote was wrong implies it really was a vote for war. The sad thing is I think many of these people really are that stupid.)

But overall, the change in the last few weeks is very positive. On an anti-Kerry thread started by a lame NC poster, most of the posts called him for spewing RW lies. He down thread was whining that he was criticized because the Kos people liked Kerry, unlike Lieberman!

Some of his complaints were creative. That Kerry "found" Jewish roots when he did to get money from Jewish fund raisers and now he says he's Christian. He also said Kerry never spoke of religion in 2004 and is copying Kaine, but he is insincere. He also thought that Kerry should have had Edwards talk about Kerry's life because he could do it better than Kerry. Oh, Kerry should run for Governor of Massachusetts first. (He seemed willing to back everyone over Kerry.) The good news though is that Kerry got more support than he did. Also, there were people who felt the whole good/bad argument was not productive.

it's a great sign. These people are like a barometer for the level of interest and importance of any initiative Kerry introduces. The fact that they are literally surfacing like cockroaches is very telling. Oliver North? IOW, there is a direct correlation between the amount of positive coverage Kerry will receive and the number of cockroaches that surface.
