Kerry and Kennedy halt move to tear down Fall River bridge (Fall River, MASS - AP) - An effort by Senate Republicans to tear down the Brightman Street Bridge in Fall River has been scuttled by the state's two senators.
The span has become a focal point in the debate over whether a liquefied natural gas terminal should be built in the city.
Oklahoma Republican Senator James Inhofe tried to place language into a heating assistance bill that would have reversed part of a federal transportation bill preserving the bridge.
If the existing bridge can't be removed, larger LNG tankers wouldn't able to access the terminal proposed by Weaver's Cove.
Senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, along with Congressman Jim McGovern, prevented Inhofe's language from making it into the final heating assistance bill.
