Is Kerry a New Englander?
Apparently, one of our favorite posters thinks otherwise. On the Kerry vs Romney thread (DU-P) - she says neither are New Englanders. (Wow, even the BG acknowledges that Kerry is a resident of MA) Her reason is that he spends most of his time in PA. He sounds like he's from Boston and we saw his house when we walked around Boston. (It seems to me he's in DC a lot) So, I guess he has to stay alone in Boston every week, instead of with his wife to remain a Bostonian.

1. I'd say so
Then what the hell is he if he's not a New Englander. If he was a Western Pennsylvanian he would be saying yinzer and stuff like that. He definely sounds New England to me. He says idear too, though its idea for the last time alrady. Why do people care about trival stuff like this. We don't choose where we're from, if Kerry was southern like I am, I wouldn't care.

3. Hey, I live in Western Pa and I say Kerry is MA all the way.
I love the New England accent, the W PA accent is just lazy and Bush sounding. Sorry, W PA. (I'm a Philly girl born and raised)Standard W PA speak- yins - similar to "you all" -ex. like in, Are yins going? How about this- I'll take a pop. (this is in reference to a soda) or git me a buggy. This refers to getting a shopping cart. So you see, I think JK is and has to remain MA all the way.
Now, as not to offend Global Village, I have to add that GV is the exception to this Pittsburgh speak.

5. I am just ballbusting on that
My grandparents are Western PAers and I may live out there if I go to Pitt. My grandfather says yinz. I know pop and hate it. Nah I think GV won't be offended and we can pick on me for being Southern though I don't sound it at least thats what I am told.

6. What's 'yinzer'?
If this is about that idiotic 'He's not Irish' thing again, I am going to get wicked pissed. And the good Senator has some very good ideers and is wicked smaht. And I f*ckin voted for him in every f*cking election he's been in and I didn't vote for no damn 'foreigner' like Romney, the cahpetbaggin liar from Utah by way of Michigan. My douchebag Governor is a lying piece of Rethug crap and anyone who tells yuhz differently is on something.

Ferchrissakes, what do we need a pedigree certificate? What is this the friggin dog show? That Romney loving piece of shit bastard can bite me. Cheesus, Mary & Joseph, tell that freeper to take a jump off the Tobin.

Yinzer or yinz is Pittsburghnese for you guys or you all. My grandfather is notorious for saying it. You chowdah head. It has nothing to do with being Irish. I thought about the Western Pa thing though, maybe thats how he's gotten support from Franco Harris in the past not only in the presidential election but the Weld race too.

10. Ohh I thought you thought yinzer was a diss at Kerry
Where the fuck do are the Romneys really from? I mean his dad was from Michigan i think but he lived in Utah. God its just like Senator Dumbass (R) Virginia whos dadda was born in Michigan but he was born in California. That Irish thing is really fucking lame, there are many people like Kerry who don't find out the truth until they're older. Speaking of that I thought I read somewhere he really was part Irish too. Either way it's a small thing and anyone who tries to make an issue out of it is a douchebag. Don't you mean losah?

12. Well, technically, Kleeb
the term would be 'f*cking douchebag losah piece of shit bastard.' I compressed it for brevity's sake.

Yinzer is yuhz in Western Pa. got it. (Mostly. My mutha uses yuhz in both the second person singular and as the second person plural. To wit: "Are yuhz staying fah lunch. I got a wicked price on this cawnned beef at the Stah Mahket and if yuhz don't eat it I'll have to throw it out."

"Gee Ma, what an offah. Eat this or yah throw it out? Is that supposed to make me want ta stay or leave?"

"Cheesus Christmas, you're as smart-mouthed as yuhz ever was. You know what I meant."

And the good taller Sen from Mass is a real, ahm, Heinz 57. (I couldn't resist. That is another phrase my Mutha uses all the time. It denotes many different strains to make up one item.) His ancesters, one one side, were part of the now extinct Brahmin branch of Boston. (Extinct now, honest. Seriously. If he's a Brahmin, then I think he's covered under the 'Endangered Species Act' and they ought to take steps to, ahm, collect samples so the species can be preserved.)

The other side is like so many Americans, a real hodge podge. During 2004, when silly people with nothing better to do and with heaps of time on their hands, dissected his ancestry, they discovered Scots-Irish ancestry. Apparently something to do with people who lived here, but way, way, back. I think. http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/URQUHART.HTM I saw this place last summer, but only because it was on the tour. (Then again, the Scots, when I was there, were arguing about which town got to put up a plaque to mark where Scotty, the imaginary and wholely ficitonal character from Star Trek would be born and thus able to claim as his Scottish home town. Ahm, 4 or 5 towns were battling for the right to put up plaques for an imaginary character. What does this say about claims on a possible US Pres. I don't know, but I take it with a grain of salt.)

13. So he's of Scots-Irish not actual Irish ancestry
The Scots-Irish are an interesting group of people and they are the subject of a book by a certain senate candidate from a certain state. Real interesting people. If you read David McCullough's Truman you get a little bit of background on their mindset.

14. I think it goes way back.
In all honesty, I think my taller Sen is Irish by Association. He has the sense of humor of the Irish and really, what else is there? The cooking? (Boston Irish sense of humor is fatalistic, sarcastic, cutting and really funny, all at once. Yeah, it's like that.)

but the only one that I know of who can actually accept him in Teddy K since that man is a full blooded son of Ireland. I myself am only a quarter. Yeah Kerry definely has the humor of the Irish.

16. No, we want it not to matter
Bosotn is now a majority minority city. That is old, old stuff and came with bad baggage. (Well, for some of us.) Out with the old, in with the more inclusive and forward-looking new. Boston will be a better town for it.

17. I noticed that while I was there the minority thing
and people didnt sound anything like the sterotypes, I was disappointed. Haven't decided when I'll go back since I don't have much money but if I do, I'll find something to do. Need to go to a game or something like that.

24. Scots Irish! Now that is interesting for two reasons to me.
One is that many of our President's were of Scots Irish ancestry. This must be where Kerry gets his thriftiness. And second, I am also of Scots-Irish decedent- on my mother's side. Somehow the thriftiness missed my generation though. My grandmother's name was Annie Maggee McConnell. Some name as far as I am concerned. I am grateful my mother decided not to pass it down.

2. Sen Kerry is a New Englander.
Didn't you see him wearing the duck boots from LL Bean in Vek's pic thread? Who else would wear duck boots with a gorgeous tailored suit but a New Englander? (Dammit, it's practical, you get a lot of value for your money and if they ever wear out you can return them and get them either restitched or new boots. Nothing says New Englander like someone who buys clothing that can become heirlooms in a family.)

Is the Senator a Bay Stater? (So much nicer the nicer phrase than Masshole.) I hear he drives too fast sometimes, swears on occasion like a, ahm, sailor, and that, during a recent period when he was angling for a promotion still followed the Red Sox every day and even donned the garb universal for all true Sawx fans. (Even when he was outside New England. Nothing says BayStater like wearing your Sawx hats or shirts, even during said ahm, job interview.)

Is the Senator a Bostonian? Fercrissakes, he had to put a chair out to save his parking space on Beacon Hill after a snowstorm last year. If that doesn't scream Bostonian, I don't know what does.

8. Damn straight he's a New Englander
Yes, he does spend some time in Western PA. But he spends more time in Washington, and quite a bit in Boston. They've also got homes on Nantucket (also in MA) and in Idaho. Whoever said that is full of sh*t.

11. I think some people post
just to see their name in print. Kerry's roots are fairly well implanted in New England, I'd say. It kinda, sorta works that way when your great-great-great-whatever grandfather is John Winthrop.

Besides, the poster's logic is fatally flawed. John Kerry could spend everyday for the rest of his life outside of New England, and he'd still be a New Englander. (Just as I could spend every day for the rest of my life outside of the South and I'd still be a Southerner.) Geez.
