New Thread for Faneuil Hall speech, cuz the other thread was too big
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 11:23 AM by TayTay
Excellent catch from MH1:

Holy smokes - I just flippin' realized
the significance of April 22. :smackshead:

I don't see where anyone has mentioned this upthread (I only had time to skim quickly, I am buried at work)...is it just too obvious to mention?

I've been bypassing this thread cuz I can't go. Now seeing Tay's thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

I just realized...oh, THAT April 22nd!!!

35 years later...

http://www.c-span.org/2004vote/jkerrytestimony.asp

...April 22nd, I hope to continue that tradition with you in a very personal discussion about the meaning and responsibility of freedom and the enormous challenges our country faces as our soldiers are fighting and dying in a war that has gone off course, with dissent and debate stifled here at home.

Damn I wish I could be there.

*******************8

Nice catch you. I think that's what is called resonance.

Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 11:33 AM by MH1
If you remind them it is the 35th anniversary of that incredible day, will it help?

Edit to add: Thanks for trying, GV, no matter what happens.

22 has been my favorite number since I was a kid. Now it all makes sense to me.

10. It also explains some of the seemingly cryptic comments
that suggested looking over his career and the role of dissent.

The intensity of the times recently when he has spoken of the wall and not being a Senator who could stay silent is obvious - at the Allard one he clearly was very emotional.

I laid it on pretty thick, but I really do think this is a momentous day in the history of Congress. That's what C-Span is all about, after all, so they should cover it. You know, if I had realized, I would have flown to Mass. Sorry, Mass folks, he may be your Senator, but he belongs to all of us this Saturday. 35 years. And he's fighting the same fight now that he did then.

Damn, MH. The rest of us must be fresh out of light bulbs. We're all "Dum de dum dum...wonder what the Senator is going to talk about? Could be anything. dum de dum..."

I was definitely the most clueless.

:silly:

LOL. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

God bless ya, Senator. Kick some ass this Sat, we've got your back!

:patriot:

edit to remove my moronic error.

Thanks for catching that, though, GV! With Democrafty away for a bit, the blog kind of languished -- my own entries are still simmering -- so you haven't missed much! We're very glad you like We Love John Kerry, though, and I will post again here soon next time there's an update.

Btw, GV -- do you have any idea whether it is more effective to call C-SPAN vs. e-mailing them? If calling might work, do you have a suggestion for the best number to give people?

(edited to add second paragraph)

16. I completely agree GV
This is the proverbial 'matter of life and death' and Sen. Kerry will be speaking with all the hats on that he has worn in his life. The one for the person who saw a civil war up close, saw what it did to friend and foe alike and came back to speak out on it. The one for the man who risked his future plans and dreams on a protest, cuz, at heart, he couldn't take not speaking out. And the hat of the Senator with 22 years of experience on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who has seen a lot of what has been both right and wrong with our foreign policy over the years. All those hats, plus the recent visits with friends like Del Sandusky ad Max Cleland and the knowledge that the present actions in Iraq are reverberating in them, just like the actions taken in the war in Vietnam did all those years ago. Many hats indeed.

Yeah, we in Massachusetts may have elected him, but we did so to speak nationally and to speak with a strong voice on these kinds of issues. That he will do so honors this state and honors the memory of so many who patriotically gave everything so that this right to dissent, this right to speak truth to power would be there when Americans need it. So yeah, I agree, this is national. It will be an honor to hear it in person.

Funny, but if I wanted a preview of what the good Senator is going to say, I would re-watch the PTSD presentation at Harvard from last month. Seems to me that is as good a motivator and preview as I would need.

9. "Patriot's Day"
I guess that's what they celebrate in Mass today, but I think you are right - it should be April 22nd. (of course that wouldn't get you all the one day reprieve on tax filing, but hey.)

11. It's devolved into Boston Marathon Day
over the years, which means it's also "you can't get there from here" day in the Boston area (i.e. forget crossing Beacon Street and large portions of Commonwealth Avenue for most of the day.

When I was a kid the entire town marched from Acton to Concord, following the route of the Minutemen in 1776.

http://www.battleroad.org/events.html

Acton's Isaac Davis trail march to Concord - Monday, April 17th, 2006 at 5:50 am at the Isaac Davis Homestead on Hayward Rd. in Acton and 6:30 am at the monument in Acton Center.
The Acton Minutemen will arrive at the North Bridge at 8:50 am and take part in the Commemoration of the Concord Conflict. Be part of the tradition - march the trail with the Acton Minutemen and the Davis Blues.

Guess they still do it. It was a great event.

19. April 21st and April 22nd are forever connected to saving . . .
the Earth, and the celebration of the right to dissent by speaking truth to power, and helping to end the lie of war.

April 21st: is John Muir's Birthday (and mine  !) I have always been into John Muir since I have similar interests: climbing, exploring, natural history, geoscience, and environmental conservation, and also he was the Sierra Club founder and the club's first President. I've been a member of the Sierra Club for a very long time (approx. '74 or so) when I first took the Sierra Club course -- Basic Mountaineering. I have read many of his books and have many in my personal library. However, I never knew what his birth-date was, never really paid attention. Then when I was stationed at Ft. Myer, VA, in the US Army Honor Guard ('82-'84), one weekend I walked through the National Portrait Museum in Washington, DC, and witnessed the portrait of Muir, and to my jaw dropping surprise it gave the birth-date and death-date on a brass plate below -- birth-date April 21st! It was a real epiphany for me and a very meaningful personal experience and connection. http://www.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/

April 22nd: Earth Day since 1970, the day after John Muir's B-day.
http://earthday.envirolink.org/history.html

April 22nd, 1971: The day John F. Kerry spoke truth to power about the Vietnam War and helped bring the lie to an end.
"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

April 22nd, 2006: President Kerry speaks 35 years later to the day. I hope it is just as moving and historical. I'm excited. Hope C-Span covers it. Can't wait.:applause:

20. Hey Klimmer
Happy birthday.
I'm a recent Sierra Club member, but better late than never. Also an April birthday.
You should call or e-mail C-Span. The more people they hear from, the more likely they are to carry the event.
I'm excited too!

24. CNN has taken notice
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/19/sr.weds/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Meanwhile, one of Bush's most vocal critics, Sen. John Kerry (D-Massachusetts), is asking political supporters to back his Iraq plan that calls for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops if Iraqis are not able to form a new government by May 15. If Iraq does form a government, Kerry said U.S. troops should then leave the country by years end. Kerry, who lost to Bush in the 2004 presidential race and is now eyeing another run for his party's nomination, told supporters he plans to deliver a major speech about Iraq on Friday.

"Decades ago I stood up to the Nixon administration and spoke out for a change of course in Vietnam," Kerry said in an e-mail sent yesterday. "Four days from now, I will be delivering a speech at Boston's Faneuil Hall on the critically important topic of war and dissent. It's time to remind America that, when a stubborn president has America headed profoundly in the wrong direction, only citizen action can change our country's course."
