<Pennsylvania Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. (D), who is expected to face Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) in November, yesterday endorsed two leading Democratic healthcare proposals.
Casey leads Santorum by double digits in opinion polls but has been criticized by the incumbent and in newspaper editorials for being vague about where he stands on issues.
In a speech outlining his healthcare policies, Casey endorsed a bill sponsored by Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) to expand health coverage to small employers and a bill sponsored by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) to increase federal funding for Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
“No issue hits closer to home for me than healthcare. It is for me, literally, at the heart of why I am running for the Senate,” Casey said in a statement from his campaign.
“These proposals are fiscally reckless and would cost taxpayers cost tens of billions of dollars,” Santorum spokeswoman Virginia Davis said.>
