We are halfway between Christmas and Easter.
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 06:46 PM by ih8thegop
February 9 comes 46 days after Christmas. Thus, whenever Ash Wednesday falls on February 9, it is exactly halfway between Christmas and Easter, which this year will be March 27.

Why is Lent 46 days long instead of 40? Well, they don't count the six Sundays of Lent among the 40 days. Why? I don't know.

1. Because Sundays could not be fast days
And Lent was 40 days of fasting, back in the day. All Sundays are "little Easters" and so feast days.

The stuff you pick up over a lifetime of reading trivia....
