How offensive is this?

Man, it's hard to ignore crap like that. I could even stand it if this asshole didn't know how much this could hurt some Catholics but it's Catholic baiting plain and simple.

2. I agree with you
but I don't think we will ever get rid of religious bashing on DU. Catholics are, unfortunately, fair game these days because of the scandals. I think our best bet is to try to ignore such threads and avoid flame wars.

We aren't going to change anyone's opinion, just as they can't change ours.

just my $.02

3. I agree...
...to a point. Ignoring stupidity like the thread referred to is probably a good idea (it seemed more "stupid" than anything). I do think that if we remind people, in our posts, that we are for social and environmental justice, that we believe in the "just war concept," and that this IS the position of our church (and if enough people calmly and consistently do so) we may change a few minds.

If each one of us helped change 1 mind...

5. Great idea, etherealtruth!
:hi: I'm afraid we (Catholics) will stay "fair game" for some time to come due to the past scandals.

9. Unfortunately, we've always been "fair game"

to a certain set of people here. Ragging on Catholics has always been a popular pastime. long before the scandals.

7. Well, I'm skeptical but I have to agree to try
After all, I always say that I believe everyone and anyone can change and grow. SO I guess I gotta' put my money where my mouth is, don't I? O8)

6. It's pretty tasteless, but...
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 06:59 PM by pelagius
...to most DUers the Pope isn't the Vicar of Christ, he's just another media figure to goof on. Having no particular religious devotion themselves -- although most claim to be "spiritual" in some lame form or another -- they can barely imagine the hurt they can cause. After all, it's just a joke, right? :-(

The guy who started this, though, knew what he was doing. I don't think everyone else in the pile-on does, however.

On edit: moved some misplaced words.

8. I get more discouraged every

time that I'm on DU. Besides the perpetual ragging on Catholics, the support for the kill-the-crip film "Million Dollar Baby" is deeply depressing to me, especially when one thread after another looks forward to the starvation death of Terri Schiavo, or to the death of His Holiness. If you're disabled, a disturbing number of DUers want you to die.

12. Again -- there is NO anti-Catholic bias here on DU?
I'll shut up before I say any more.
