The Los Angeles Times' Scott Gold details the Roman Catholic church's plans to open the first all-male missionary dedicated to fighting only euthanasia and abortion. Priests will be trained in media relations, lobbying and, they will learn how to conduct voter registration drives, although endorsing or opposing a political candidate would jeopardize their tax-exempt IRS status.

AMARILLO, Texas — The Roman Catholic Church plans to establish its first religious society devoted exclusively to fighting euthanasia and abortion, church leaders said this week.

The male-only Missionaries of the Gospel of Life — founded by Father Frank A. Pavone, an outspoken opponent of abortion rights — will be housed in a vacant Catholic high school and dormitory on the grounds of the Diocese of Amarillo.

The order will have a decidedly political bent, and will be active rather than contemplative, Pavone said.<snip>

Yanta said some priests would eventually be sent out to perform more general parish duties, although they would maintain a special focus on abortion.

Pavone said he believed the society would draw more people to the priesthood because abortion was such a passionate cause to so many people.

1. You fight abortion by raising the self-respect and self-esteem of

young girls and women, not through protests and seemingly jack booted techniques. Through setting a good example for our Daughters and guiding the young people we are blessed to work with toward a moral life.

You win nothing by FIGHTING per se ... not by passing laws and self-righteously preach "guilt trips" in front of Abortion Clinics ... We achieve success (significantly lower the rate of abortion) by quality attention to (thoughtful tracking on their activities) our young people and proper moral guidance. ;)

If only we could capture some of the seemingly zealot anti-abortionists' zeal and direct it toward social injustice? Now then we could address all kinds of inequality ... we could truly express our love and caring for the poor and disenfranchised of this world. <soulful sigh>
