with JP II in Poland. He was Jewish; they were best of friends. (The man and his father, who was a doctor, got out of Poland in time to escape the Nazis but his mother & sister were murdered by them.) He lost touch with Karol for many years but reconnected with him when he heard the news that he had become an Archbishop.
He and his wife were among the very first people to have a private audience with him after he became the Pope. Years later, he also accompanied him to Israel and to the Wailing Wall. It was very touching. He talked abt Karol going to synagogue with him and abt another occasion where he went to the church where Karol was an altar boy to wait for him. A woman leaving the church saw him and said 'aren't you Dr. Kohn's boy?' He said yes, and she asked him what he was doing in church, giving him a nasty look. He said he was waiting for his friend. When he told Karol the story, he said he became very angry and told him that she was just another person who was deluded abt being a real Catholic.
