What is the difference between

"character defects" and "short commings?" I have asked a few people and they also seem to be stumped. I know I can get a good answer here.

1. OK, I'd say lying is a character defect but

not using proper etiquette is a shortcoming.

Of course I mean habitual lying, particularly telling lies that can cause harm.

Everyone lies sometimes; not telling white lies when appropriate is bad manners
(e.g., When asked "Do you like my new hair style?" replying "It looks like it was cut with a Weed Whacker might be honest but it's bad manners.")

Added on Edit:

I only meant these as examples of character defects and shortcomings, but perhaps all or most character defects are subsets of lying, e.g. people who betray friends lie, thieves lie, adulterers lie. I think greed is another character defect. The seven deadly sins can provide a nice starting point for looking at character defects.

Possibly all shortcomings are subsets of bad manners, too?

Seems like the basis for a good discussion if we can just get some more players in here. ;-)
