St. Christopher
I know I should know this, but I'm admitting that I don't. Is St. Christopher still considered to be a major patron saint in the Church, or has his status been changed?

(Reason I ask is a good friend is getting ready to take a big trip overseas and I'd like to get him a St. Christopher medal or some such as a bon voyage gift before he leaves...)

1. He's off the calender and many consider him to be a myth but
he remains one of the most beloved saints none the less. I'd wear a St. Christopher medal before I'd wear a Pius Xii medal myself.

2. Even if he's a myth
Then there would still be a person or people at the very basis of it. One can accept St. Christopher in that manner without buying into the fantastical story of him carrying the child across the river.

I'd certainly have no problem with a medal of St. Christopher.

3. Once one accepts the love of God
what's fantastical about Christopher? I love the Vatican experts who are so embarrassed over some of our more primitive customs and beliefs.

4. I think my friend would like it as well
But do you have any other suggestions in terms of a little religious-based gift I could give? I'm open to ideas...St. Christopher just immediately came to mind.

5. I think St Christopher came to mind first because he is so
traditional. He's been a member of the family a long, long time; and I think family is what it's all what it comes down to.
