I sent this in to the local paper yesterday morning regarding the recent events in Kansas. If this gets published I'll probably have quite a few members of our local right wing contingent - both in and outside the church - not very happy with me.
Regardless of how I feel about abortion, what happened Sunday inside Redemption Lutheran Church in Wichita was an abomination and an act of terrorism. Regardless of what Dr. George Tiller had done, where he stood with the Lord, or what his beliefs were, no one had any right to take his life.
Not only does the suspect bear responsibility, but people such as Bill O'Reilly who spent a lot of time demonizing Dr. Tiller have responsibility as well. I do believe it was O'Reilly's words which helped convinced the suspect to commit murder.
And it angers me that an act of terrorism was committed inside a church. The suspect used the Lord because he thought it served his purpose. However he was quick to desecrate a House of God by firing a deadly weapon at another human being inside that House, resulting in the death of that human being.
There is no acceptable justification for what happened. It was an act of terrorism, which is made all the worse because it happened in a House of God. It is past time we stand up and say that violence is not an acceptable answer to the question of abortion or any other issue we face today.
