Olbermann had an interesting segment on
Keith Olbermann had Rev. Welton Gaddy on this evening. Gaddy - the President of the Interfaith Alliance - spoke with Keith about the church's recent meddling in the health care debate, as well as the news of the Archdiocese of Washington might stop providing social services if the city doesn't change its mind on gay marriage.

I think I am going to take some time and think very carefully about whether I want to remain in the church or not.

1. I'm doing the same.
The ultimatum the archdiocese issued to DC was the last straw.

I can't decide, though, whether it's better to stay and try to make changes, perhaps stir a few people up, or to go elsewhere. Part of me really is a frustrated Episcopalian...

2. I'm staying.
I love the Eucharist, I love praying the rosary, I love being involved in activities like the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at my church. I love being part of a chuch that is still around after 2000 years, alsomost in spite of itself. That is why I became a Catholic this late in life, after pondering the idea on and off for over 20 years.

Consider why you have stayed this long, and whether you still feel it's worth it to stay, despite the reactionaries that make the news and unfortunately define Catholicism for the general public right now. For me, it is.

3. My view is that if the hierarchy have got it wrong, why should I have to go?
I know that sounds arrogant and presumptious, but they have been wrong before and can still get it terribly wrong.

I don't think outside pressure will ever change the Church; it can only come from within.

I don't like the current move back to focussing on fussy doctrinal points and narrow pedantry; I think the Vatican
has misjudged the times and must go back to the spirit of Vatican II if it wants to survive.

We desperately need another John XXIII, but it seems that over the past couple of decades the Church has been trying
to pretend that he didn't exist, and the previous pope stacked the College of Cardinals with enough conservatives
to make sure that the next pope will also come from their ranks.

I put my hope in the progressive priests and bishops who are courageous enough to speak their minds, but it does
look very bleak sometimes ....

4. Hang in there
The Church is not perfect, but it is ours..
