This
letter to the editor was in the Dubuque paper this morning.
I raced down to the Cathedral for morning Mass one mean wintry day, almost late.
I had to slow down because of the elderly ahead of me: Bent-over old men breathing heavily as they climbed two flights of stairs and frail, silver-haired old women bravely treading icy sidewalks and drift-packed curbs.
Funny, the young cannot be bothered with God even on Sunday, yet these crippled up elderly cannot keep away from Christ even for everyday morning Mass.
What a "Norman Rockwell" picture! What an inspirational moment for me -- don't think I'll forget it quickly! (Hope not.)
For some reason the letter reminded me of Luke chapter 18, specifically the part about the pharisee who used prayer to boast about what a goody two shoes he was. When my grandparents still lived in their home, neither one of them had any moral hangups about not going to church - grandpa especially.
