When the Brooklyn-born Father Mychal actually met Mother Teresa during one of her New York visits, he asked for spiritual advice.

"Pray at least two hours a day," the saintly nun replied.
"Yeah, I will," Father Mychal replied. "But I gotta get to work, you know?"

1. I find myself re-reading his last homily.

Good days and bad days. Up days, down days. Sad days, happy days. But never a boring day on this job. You do what God has called you to do. You show up. You put one foot in front of another. You get on the rig and you go out and you do the job - which is a mystery. And a surprise. You have no idea when you get on that rig. No matter how big the call. No matter how small. You have no idea what God is calling you to. But he needs you. He needs me. He needs all of us.

2. I hadn't heard of him before,

but I read about him, and he was certainly a most extraordinary and inspiring man.

I should think his chances of official sainthood are almost zero though - a progressive, liberal thinker; a great heart, and gay! Just the sort of priest to attract letters of complaint from Opus Dei.

And the sort of churchman the world needs.

3. "The Saint of 9/11."

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I'd recommend viewing The Saint of 9/11. It's not that the film isn't painful to watch at some moments; it is. But it also gives you something to take away, spiritually and emotionally, without excessively idealizing Mychal Judge or shying away from the harder aspects of of grief and loss, or of identity and self-acceptance, or of recovery from addiction. Oh, and the man evidently had a hell of a sense of humor.

I don't want to give too much away but will just say that Father Mychal's ministry was so much more than that last call he answered.
