Prayer of St. Francis - something nice to read
Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

1. It is a beautiful prayer.
Thank you for giving it to us.

I just gave my CCD class a thumbnail biography on St Francis. He was a fantastic individual.

2. I have that prayer on several prayer cards; it's a favorite.

The day after Epiphany 1995 I visited Assisi, knelt and prayed at the tomb of St. Francis, which is in the crypt of the basilica built over his tomb to honor his life. It was freezing cold and there was snow on the ground, but a lot of people in the chapel in the crypt. (I'd meant to be there on Epiphany but the snow closed the roads.) It was great to be there and touch the cold stone of his tomb. The basilica has great artwork as well.

3. That prayer is on the back of my grandpa's funeral mass card.
On the front is a photo of Mary holding Baby Jesus.

4. In this age of hatred,.....
The Prayer of St. Francis reminds us to overcome hate with love, violence with peace, evil with good.
It's very easy to get caught up in the evil of the Bush II era, especially when we're the targets of their wrath.

6. It really is a lovely prayer.
Somewhat irrelevantly: Is it really properly attributed to Francis? I know that it is popularly attributed to him, but I seem to remember hearing that it really should be attributed to some other person ...
