It weighs on me, even here at DU where we are not actually in the same room as the other person.
The thing that gets to me the most regarding ignorant people who try to talk about mental illness like they got a Ph.D. when they've actually never even read a fucking pop psychology book, is that they think every time someone commits some terrible crime it must be because that person is mentally ill. Granted some mentally ill people do commit crimes, and some pretty bad ones sometimes, but there are far more people in our prison system who are not mentally ill. I think it's about a 1:10 ratio, which is probably pretty close to the ratio of mentally ill people to normal people out in society.
People in GD were talking like they were an authority on the matter when they don't even know what the legal definition of insanity is. They think mentally ill people are dumb. They think mentally ill people are weak. They think psychiatric medication gets you high and makes you phony. They don't know that mental illness is a biological problem. They don't think that anyone who is mentally ill can succeed in life. They think mentally ill people are dangerous, when it's more likely that they will be hurt by someone who is sane.
These people are supposed to be more intelligent and open-minded than conservatives, but they are every bit as ignorant and bigoted when it comes to the issue of mental illness.
I feel better now. :)
