I was home all last week and thought I could get a buyer for it. No dice. Yesterday, I thought about giving it to charity. Since I'm away from home a lot I don't really have time to fool around trying to sell the thing. I think this is a bad time of year to try to sell larger ticket items like that anyway with Christmas coming up.
So I decided to give it to charity. Then it just became a search for one I'd like to donate to. There were several I came across, but I couldn't find one to do the deal today. Then I remembered a place close to home that I can directly donate to that helps people in my community. It's called The Castle and they help mentally ill people. The Castle itself is a large old home that was converted into a place where mentally ill people can come to socialize and get a good meal. Being a mentally ill person, I went there a while back to check the place place out. I didn't decide to join, but I thought the place was cool. When you are in treatment or recovering from a mental illness, I think it's a good thing to get out in the world and be around other people, even though it might be difficult at first. It's a really good thing if you can find people who truly understand what you are going through.
So I set up an appointment and the guy who runs the place is going to take the truck off of my hands today. All of the proceeds from the vehicle will go to The Castle. Since it's a truck they may decide to keep it. Whatever they decide to do with it is fine by me, but it would be really cool to show up there one day and see it hauling stuff around. :)
If you give to charity, please consider one that helps the mentally ill. There has been some discussion here about the insensitivity and bigotry at DU regarding mentally ill people and we all know about the social stigma associated with it. If people who are generally open minded engage in such behavior, then I think it would be easy to understand the kind of uphill battle we are faced with in dealing with the public in general.
