I can't believe no one has started a Terry Pratchett thread

So let me be the first.

Actually, I feel like starting several Terry Pratchett threads. One to discuss his reality-trippy novels like "Reaper Man." One to discuss his more philosophical works like "Small Gods." One to discuss his last couple of more overtly political books.

And another thread devoted entirely to why I want to be Granny Weatherwax when I grow up.

But for now, let this serve to test the waters and see what we can get going.

... "Vorbis" came to mind immediately. So I wasn't too surprised when he did invade another country on a pretext, just like in the book!

2. Granny is my hero!

She defines witchery. She's a law unto herself. Nanny Ogg would be my favorite aunt and Magrat a much loved sister. Granny's practice of headology is exactly the type of psychology that should be practiced worldwide. Ah, Dame Esmerelda Weatherwax.

I have all of Pratchett's books except the newest hardback and reread them every few months just to see if anything new has happened.

5. He's an Author. You'll find him in any fantasy section.

He's written, and is writing, a ton of great novels set in "Discworld", a world of his own creation which is a satire of fantasy and the human condition in general. Way better, IMHO, than Harry Potter.

8. I saw where you asked

for recommendations in another thread and you simply must try one of Pratchetts. It's a meld of fantasy, humor, wit, great character development. The more I read, the more I want to read.

4. I prefer the City Watch centered books myself.

I also think his writing's getting much better over the years. You can tell "The Colour of Magic" was one of his earliest works, real rough around edges. His more recent stuff "The Truth" or "The Thief of Time" aren't just entertaining, but very well written (does that make any sense?) "Nightwatch" is a work of fine literature.

6. Just finished "Going Postal!" last week

Very interesting outlook on the nature of finance, especially the whole rainbow bit at the end.

I've read almost all of his Discworld stuff. If you've read his very early Strata book, you'll find its the precursor for discworld. The geometry is almost the same :)

I really think he's grown a lot as a writer. His recent books have injected a lot more philosophical inflections and social commentary. And he never fails to make me laugh.

Although I also enjoyed Pyramids.
