Silverlock -- Best Ever or Just Awful?

A friend of mine said it was his favorite book ever,
but I started it and the guys just seemed like a total
goob -- Thomas Covenant on steriods.

1. The game is in finding all the fantasy references

The story itself is just so-so -- some good moments, but nothing to write home about.

And yes, the hero is intentionally something of an idiot -- but that doesn't make it any easier to put up with him. It's that peculiarly 40's style of self-serving greediness that set the norm for today's Republican Party.

3. Interesting book

main for the "spot the ref" game, but pretty dry reading by today's fantasy standards.

4. "Silverlock" is an Adventure in the Commonwealth of Letters....

Our "hero" is a business-administration major who has a lot to learn. All the characters he meets figure in world literature--ancient to fairly recent.

John Myers Myers wrote widely--Irish & Texas history were among his interests. The Moon's Fire Eating Daughter is a bit like Silverlock, delving into even more ancient literature & that beyond the "Western" tradition. Not so fine as a novel, but some of us love this sort of literate guessing game.
