Anyone Else Waiting Patiently for "A Dance With Dragons" by George R.R. Martin

I absolutely love the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and cannot wait for the next book to come out. I used to be a big The Wheel of Time fan but since reading George R.R. Martin's work I have not read a Robert Jordan book since "The Path of Daggers".

1. Not so patient here!

I'm re-reading Wheel of Time just so I have everything fresh in my head before I start the new book. It does get bogged down, but it's still pretty fascinating to me. I hope Jordan staves off his disease for a good long while so he can finish WOT and get on to some new stuff.

Four books in the series have been published with the fifth, titled A Dance of Dragons due for release in 2007. Titles for the sixth and seventh books are The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring (previously A Time for Wolves), respectively.

5. There are *three* more books?!

Talk about mixed feelings! I probably won't find out what finally happens to these people in a Dance of Dragons, but then I'll still have two more books to look forward to.

When do I get to see if my hunch about Jon Snow's parentage is correct? Does Cersei - the character you love to loathe - finally get her comeuppance?

"The Sword Sword" Issue #1 comes out on Wednesday June 20. It's the comic book sequel to "The Hedge Knight," which takes place 100 years before A Song of Ice and Fire.

7. So what are you reading to tide you over?

I'm reading "the children of hurin" that I borrowed from my dad. I like it so far.

Then I have a think birding book that I got for xmas that I want to read. I like to alternate my sci0fi/fantasy reading with non-sci-fi/fantasty. After the bird book, I was thinking of reading Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy - never touched it before. Then I don't know, I may go back and re-read some Vonnegut and Dick.

Magic Ship Trilogy
Fool Trilogy.

That's 9 really good books, there
Inter related, best read in order and utterly wonderful.

Have you read any of her new series - The Soldier Son trilogy? really good stuff. She does an excellent job of creating unique fantasy worlds and characters.

I'm about half way through the second one that just came out in PB. They are nothing like her previous books. Still kept me up to 4am the other day until I forced myself to put it down and get some sleep. :D

The Malazan Empire series. All of you, get these books. Best. Fantasy. Series. Ever. Period.

I say this as a huge Martin fan. Erikson is better.

The worst part is, I discovered the series waaaaaay back when AGOT was new and in hardcover. So I've grown used to the wait.

20. Another suggestion to tide folks over...

I've really been enjoying the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Think Patrick O'Brian (author of the Master and Commander nautical adventures) with dragons! Really engrossing alternate history - highly recommended. The 4th book just came out in PB. The first book is "His Majesty's Dragon".

21. I'm actually reading that right now...

I'm almost done with the first book. I picked it up on the advice of someone here on DU and finally got around to it this week. It took me until about halfway through to really get into it, but I am enjoying it. I already bought the others in the series. I'm trying to get my BF to read it after he finishes the fourth Martin book. Of course, he's trying to get me to read Martin (I read the first one years ago), but I'm hesitant because I've seen the holes in the wall my boyfriend has punched whenever Martin kills another character off ;-)

22. I just started the series last fall.

I'm not a fan of fantasy, to be honest, preferring not just sci-fi, but HARD sci-fi. But a friend talked me into trying it and I was very impressed. Despite the setting of kings and such, which was never an interest to me, the strength of his writing and the depth of characters got me hooked. I haven't been able to get the second one yet at my library (I may have to buy the damn thing, something I hate doing, though I could at least give it to the library after so the next poor sap doesn't have to wait like I'm doing...).

His writing reminded me of the only other fantasy stuff I do like, the novels of Robert E. Howard. People think Conan and think Arnold, but the original stories are beautifully written. And his non Conan stories are great too (Lovecraft was a good friend, and big fan, as was J.R.R. Tolkien).

26. I just read the four "Fire and Ice" books in the last few weeks here in Vietnam.

The first, "A GAME OF THRONES" was loaned to me by a friend here. I found the second one, "A CLASH OF KINGS" in a British edition, used (lightly) in the "backpacker" area of Saigon and numbers 3 & 4, "SWORDS" and "CROWS", were available brand new at one of the local HCMC state owned Fahasa book stores.

I am wondering if George R.R. Martin is just way too rich now to bother writing anymore. It is almost 2009 and there isn't any news about when, or if, the fifth book will ever be published. He gives the impression in an epilogue in "CROWS" that the fifth book had been already written when "CROWS" was published sometime in 2005. The fourth book followed only some of the threads developed in the first three books. Martin writes in explanation that the fifth book would fill the gaps in "CROWS" due to this limited narrow focus that ignored many of the key characters featured in the first three books.

Bummer!!!

27. He's still working on it, but seems like he's having a pretty crazy year

He's put out stuff for his Wild Cards project, had Ice and Fire optioned for an HBO series, and is a big Obama supporter, so you can't say he's devoted ALL his time to it. You can check his website for updates, but I think he's only going to post another update when he submits the book to his publisher.

28. "Meanwhile back at the wall..." At the conclusion of "A FEAST FOR CROWS"...

the author states that the next installment would be forthcoming the next year, 2006 I imagine, because it had already been written and could have actually been intertwined with "A STORM OF SWORDS", the third book in the series, to have made a very, very thick tome.

I will look now for the authors web presence to learn what that/he has to report.

30. Feast For Crows was split into two books due to length. It was a long long wait for book 4

very long. Longer that the current wait.


Amazon says book 5 is due in September 2009 .. I think they are just guessing there but they are allowing one to pre order .
