A novel I would highly recommend
to all fantasy readers:

Silverlock by John Myers Myers.

Find a copy. It was written in, I believe, 1949. If you love literature, you will love Silverlock. The story is of a man who is almost drowned in a shipwreck, and winds up instead washed up on the short of this vast island called the Commonwealth. During the course of his adventures in the Commonwealth, Silverlock (so named because of the stripe of silver in his hair) meets up with various heroes, heroines, demons and other denizens who have haunted our literature for a great many years.

The Green Knight, Robin Hood, Beowulf, and perhaps more than one hundred other characters from our world of literature are found in Silverlock's Commonwealth, and if you are happy to read much at all, you will enjoy the chance to spot references in the novel.

Some years ago now, one of the best SF groups, NESFA, published a companion piece to Silverlock with all the references catalogued, but you might just want to enjoy discovering them yourself.

If you've read it, feel free to add your own recommendation, or argue why you didn't care for it yourself.

1. I read this decades ago

And while I don't remember it that well, I do recall that I enjoyed it immensely. In fact, I would probably get more out of it now, then I did back then. I'll have to see if it's still in my collection, or if it was one of the casualties of water in the storage unit...

Thanks for the reminder! :hi:

2. I've had a copy on my shelf for over fifteen years...
...but didn't get far the one time I tried to read it. Perhaps it's time to give it another shot.
