Just read "The Golden Compass"
and of course loved it. Not sure if this has been discussed before, but in addition to the inherent criticism of Catholic authoritarianism, I saw a lot of parallels to Scientology. The "bridge" to the other universe ("Bridge to Total Freedom"), intercision ("soul cracking") and a couple of other things. Anyone else see those parallels with Scientology doctrine?

1. I don't know anything about Scientology doctrine, so I can't say.
I did love the book/s, though.

3. I think Philip Pullman would be horrified at the comparison
I think probably it's that both Pullman and Hubbard are drawing on archetypal images for their mythology.
