ASOIAF: Who killed Joffrey Lanister? (ASOS spoilers abound)

Sure, Littlefinger told Sansa that he and Olenna Tyrell did it, but he has motive to lie to her about this in order to gain her trust and get in her pants.

Who really did it? Tyrion swears he didn't but then tells Jaime he did it, maybe just to hurt him after finding out the tryth about Tysha. Tywin was displeased with Joffrey's behavior and mayhave wanted a more pliant king to rule through.

My guess is Cersei. She composed herself quickly and can maintain her grip on power more effectively as Queen Regent for a younger King. Her grief in public was great but in private she was willing to get busy with Jaime only feet from where Joffrey lay in state. She may also be trying to delay her father's demand that she remarry, as it would be easy to say that her grief was to great, or that she wished to remain with Tommen for a while.

That I've forgotten most of it - my wife gave birth to our daughter right around when the book was published. And, now my daughter is almost 2 and fatherhood has made my memory foggy...

I've forgotten so much of this series since Martin seems to be on a mission to publish a new one every 3-5 years. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll live long enough (or that he will) to see it's completion.

Motive. Opportunity. Possession of the weapon.

Not counting, of course, Stannis.

No way in hell Cersei did it.

My memory could well be faulty, but I think I've last read this a lot more recently than most of you (having just started reading Martin this year) and it was the old grandmother. Someone (the weird knight?) gave Sansa a hair net with little jewels in it to wear. The old grandmother "adjusted" Sansa's hair at the banquet...then after Joffrey's death, Sansa notices that one of the stones is missing.

Like I said, I could be totally remembering this wrong, but that's the best of my recollection.

And I'll believe if you reread it, Granny states that she wants to stick around long enough to see the pie. The poison that killed Joffrey was in the pie, not in the wine.

I think it was a collaboration between Tyrell and Littlefinger, since the poison was planted in the hairnet by the drunk knight guy, who was Littlefinger's creature.

I dimly recall that he was the one who snuck the poison in, or something. If so, that would imply it was Littlefinger, since he was Littlefinger's creature, wasn't he?

My memory could be completely off, though. It has been a couple of years.

Loved seeing that little bastard go down, though. :D

Not sure why...but damn that was a shocker.

I am surprised that everyone blamed Tyrion right away. I mean, how could he know that the little bastard Joffrey was going to make him his cup bearer?

9. I got tired of waiting for these from the library --

wait three months, keep the book for three weeks,
wait another three months -- so I broke down and
bought all three in paperback yesterday for $18.

I'm pretty happy I did it. Can't believe I suffered
Jordan and Goodkind all these years without knowing
about these books.

11. I am in the re read stage, and about 12 chapters into Vol 2

but my recollection is that the old lady was the instigator. I will report when I get to that part!

Martin has absolutely no hesitation about killing a character, major, minor, nice, nasty, young, old..

no one is safe in a Martin book.

With the new book due in November, I decided I needed a refresher course in Martin.
