Anyone here read Kushiel's Dart?

Awesome book. I have the other two on my TBR.

I'm trying to learn about the genre and would like recommendations for further reading. I also read and loved The Bone Doll's Twin.

I think it's a prequel for another series. It takes place in a land that traditionally was ruled by queens, but a series of kings have come to power (if I recall correctly, legitimately, as Elizabeth became "king" of England). A pair of twins is born to a noble house -- one male and one female. The female has to be disguised as a male so that she isn't killed by the current king to keep her from usurping his son's succession to the throne. She's disguised by magic performed by a witch with fascinating consequences.

I don't want to say too much more because it would ruin the story. The book follows his/her development to puberty. It's wonderfully written.

On edit: She's raised as a male. Only her father and a couple of wizards know that she's actually a female. Even she thinks she's a boy.

4. I'm reading Kushiel's Chosen and The Bone Doll's Twin right now

Love the Kushiel's Legacy trilogy.

I met both Jacqueline Carey and Lynn Flewelling at DragonCon in September, along with Storm Constantine, whom I would highly recommend (author of the Wraeththu trilogy). They were really cool women, and I hope to be among their peers one day. :)

There were a couple of other authors I hadn't heard of before on the Gothic Journeys panel at DC, that sounded interesting too: Caitlin Kiernan and two men whose names are escaping me at the moment. I'll post them when it comes to me.

I'm just learning about fantasy, despite the fact that I just wrote one. Whether or not it sells is another question entirely.
