Photo Group January contest theme: Macro Photography
Which is close up photography.

If you want to enter and wonder what it implies, look in the voting thread here, there are a couple of examples:

Good luck folks! Break a lens! :bounce:

1. So we decided "up close" was okay, right?

2. Yes, I guess we did
Actually, the word means 'great' or 'large':

mac·ro
adj.
1. Of great size; large.
2. Large in scope or extent; large-scale

I think we could define it as close up here :-)

Here's a little bit more specific:

3. The second link is quite useful for those unfamiliar with "macro" as a cat
Recently, the practice here has been to start a contest with two threads, one for photos being submitted, and a second for comments on the pix. The submissions thread was opened with a set of guidelines, like in http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=280&topic_id=9530
It seems to be important to some people that their pix not be copied to other sites, like the smugmug galleries which normally archive these contest images.

However, that said, it also seems to be the concensus that the contest host can run it any way s/he wishes, so the above is "for your information" only.

4. Yep, I'm gonna do that too
I'll do exactly as the previous contests, lol :-)

I was thinking of publishing the submission/comment threads around the 17th, but on second thought I can't see why they shouldn't be published right away? I'll set them off tomorrow.

5. As long as you keep the contest open for a bit
because I'm going to need to practice.

6. Well, if you start the threads right away,
it will probably cause people to post pictures right away so that they will get an entry. It might be better if you held off---it will give people time to explore macro/close-ups without feeling pressured to post.

8. OK. I'll second that
I see that people are experimenting (good stuff, F. Gordon).
We follow the original timeline then:

Submission/Comments threads are posted on the 17th.

Sorry if I'm flip-floppy on this, but I've never arranged a contest before ;-)
