Firefighter training (lots of photos)
Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 11:49 PM by RadFemFL
Hi all! Thanks for your tips on taking action shots. Unfortunately, I didn't really need them, because there wasn't much action. It had snowed yesterday, so they were not digging any fire lines because it was too slippery on the slopes, and we are under a high fire danger, so they couldn't really burn anything. This was more a communications exercise. I still got a lot of great photos, though! I have not edited or cropped them yet, so these were straight out of my camera. I was using a UV filter on it, and was using tripod for some of the shots. Sorry about the sizes, haven't resized them down yet. I'll probably be working all day tomorrow on editing and resizing.

It was very snowy and muddy. I fell twice going down a steep, muddy road. My camera was not damaged, thank goodness.

One of the Gold Hill Firefighters.

Trudging down the hill after going in to assess the initial "fire".

I had to take a picture of this really cute, really young firefighter.

They unrolled and rolled a lot of hose, but didn't do a lot of spraying.

Foam coming out of the tanker truck.

Finally! I was running around like mad trying to get a spray shot. This is the only good one I got. They were just spraying around the houses, not on them.

This firefighter actually got hurt. I don't know what happened, but I think it wasn't anything serious.

In the exercise, this firetruck was burned out.

They were using our little internet cafe/general store to download weather reports and maps.

My dog had to get into the act. He followed me around all morning. The exercise lasted four hours.

All the fire departments in this area are volunteer. Loved this older guy.

These guys are with Gold Hill Fire. They were taking a break after a scenario.

1. You can resize your photos in Photobucket.
Just click on the "edit" button above the thumb image on your account. It'll ask if you want to shrink them by 25%, 50%, or 75%.

If the shots, I like the cafe and the older guy closeup. Hard to get good photos in Colorado in the middle of the day, the sun bleaches everything. Good job, in spite of the lighting.

2. Great shots, RadFem...
It sure looks like Colorado. ;) I like that picture of the older guy, too. Thanks for the tip about PhotoBucket, ITF. I didn't know that. I'm always fooling around in PaintShop making my pictures smaller - this looks a lot easier.

3. Good Job
I really like the close ups (#2, and the "old guy").
The sun was intense.

The area is beautiful, and you have some good shots.
Is the house with the bed on the roof For Sale? :)

4. LOL!
Well, for the right price, I suppose it would be...

And yes, the sun was really intense. Some of my shots were totally bleached out. I took about 300 photos.

10. Go wrap your trigger finger in ice, have a beer,
and take the rest of the day off.
:hippie:

11. Actually I had to wrap my ankle in ice...
because I'm still recovering from 2 torn ligaments from a car accident in the fall. And hadn't pushed myself that hard physically since my accident. Going up and down all those hills really made it flare up. But it's doing better today.

And I am taking today off. I just got Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck from Amazon. So it's movie day for me, and damn the housework and laundry.

8. That one is my favorite too
His eyes really tell a story, don't they?

9. They sure do
And you did a good job on capturing the light because on a photo like that, his eyes could easily have ended up shaded by the brim of his helmet.

12. I see you're dynamite on EITHER side of the lens!
I definitely like the shot of the older volunteer...
... and the Boulder county firefighter lady (is her scarf standard departmental issue?)...
... and the General Store!
I've shot in those mountains, and that is a VERY good use of the ambient light!
