I spent a lot of time in NYC as a youth. The photo of the steam and the deli bought back the very smell of the city to me. It's not a sweet-smelling city, but in a way it's home to me. So thank you very much for that, my friend. :hug:

11. I was wondering how to express a similar impression.

My first thought when I viewed this set of photos was how well they matched my brain's collection of images/impressions of NYC. I was thinking it was an eerily congruent (to my own memory bank) collection of images, each of which captured the 'mood' (as I recall it) of the subject. I tried to make a mental comparison to the prototypical images one might see in a tourist brochure ... but it didn't match. So, I was left wondering how to characterize the kind of person whose viewpoint such images represent. One thing seems clear: it's not the perspective of a NYC resident. Nor is it the perspective of a one-time visitor, perhaps a convention-goer or honeymooner. It seems to be the perspective of a person who, over some span of years, has visited NYC and is a pedestrian. That's me. These images seem to perfectly capture the range of images and experiences of a pedestrian visitor to NYC. They're really timeless. Each evokes, like you say, a memory smells and noises and the tactile sense of NYC - NOT as a resident would see it (even though they'd recognize the images) but as someone who'd spent casual time in the city. There's something quite remarkable about the collection that's separate and distinct from each image in itself.
