Digital Camera Question
OK, got a fine 35mm camera, but I want a simple digital for fun. I have been looking at the canon power shot a 530, it is a 5 mega pixel, light weight camera. I like Canon cameras and their lenses, so I am leaning toward Cannon. I also like the price under $150. with tax and shipping on this camera. So is this an ok to play with digital, or should I be looking at Fuji et al?

1. I'm not familiar with this point and shoot.
Edited on Tue Jan-02-07 08:19 PM by Maestro
The best point and shoot I had was an Olympus. However, my DSLR is a canon as are my lenses and I love them. If the point and shoot is about the same quality, you can't go wrong.

There is a good review of the camera at the above link.

3. If you ever make the move to DSLR,
I bet that most, if not all, your lenses will fit the DSLR too. Happy purchasing...

4. Depends on you
I have to have a manual mode and a hot shoe.

I really like Sony's cameras, but they are a bit more $.

5mp is just fine for practically everything.

5. Canon makes very good P&S cameras
Very good. And 5 MP is fine just for playing.

The Fuji F30 is a very interesting camera, too. It has a good, useable ISO 1600 speed (most P&S barely will go up to ISO 400) and excellent flash capabilities. If you do a lot of indoor shooting, it's the one to get. But it's about $300, I think.

6. You can't go wrong with Canon.

There is a lot more to a camera than megapixles. Canon images are better because the image processor and all of the other subtle features are superior.

The $150 price will put you at the low end of all the product lines.

7. FWIW, my youngest daughter has a Sony CyberShot with
Carl Zeiss telefoto lens. It's the older model. This camera is amazing! She took some better shots in Prague than I did! I am going to get one for myself for those times when you want to take pix but don't want to drag around the big monster.

My mom and older daughter have a FujiFinePix (LOL what's the plural of THAT??) They both swear by their cameras. I had a Fuji FinePix that looked like an SLR, that was what got me heavy into digital photography. Now I own a Canon 20D, have had it for 2 yrs.

Bottom line, for the lens quality I would go with a Sony CyberShot, but you can't go wrong with any of these brands in MHO. Depends on what features you are looking for...but the Carl Zeiss is a might nice little lens on the CyberShot.

8. Founds this "safety notice" from Canon
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 09:27 AM by priller

Canon has issued a safety notice to owners of its Powerhot A530 and A540 cameras. Certain examples of these models appear to have a design fault involving the metal spring on the door of their battery compartment allowing it to cause a short circuit which may lead to reduced battery life and the possibility of overheating.

Owners of these two models with serial numbers beginning "21" "22" "23" and "24" are advised to inspect the battery compartment in accordance with the safety notice here. and contact their local Canon Service-centre who will repair it free of charge regardless of warranty status.
