The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University was established in 1872 through a gift from James Arnold as a research station in Jamaica Plain with a mission to increase our knowledge of woody plants (trees, shrubs and vines) through research and education. The land for this endeavor was owned by Harvard University and the University appointed the first director, Charles Sprague Sargent, to assemble a collection of woody plants from around the world and to conduct research with this collection.
