Above the clouds, an inspiring sunset.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 12:33 AM by Blue_In_AK
Anchorage has been shrouded in fog for the past few days, so I decided to rise above it this afternoon and drive up on the hillside. The sunset was stunning.

Downtown Anchorage broke free of the fog for just a bit.

Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Redoubt, I believe.

A home with a view.

Can you see the odd-looking spire things next to the mountain? That's an optical illusion we get here that's similar to a mirage. It's got a special name, which I can't remember.

You can see them a little better on this one, to the sides and in front of the mountain.

1. Is "fata morgana" the name you are looking for?
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 03:48 AM by dbmk
Named after Morgana le Fay, btw.

Also called superior mirages.

Edit: More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirage

Turns out I am a little wrong. Fata Morganas are special superior mirages. Learn a little every day. :)

2. Fata Morgana sounds right.
Definitely "superior" because it was considerably warmer where I was standing than it was down in town, so much so that I was rather amazed when I got out of the car up there. The weather girl on TV last night said that it was in the mid-teens here in the city but 31 at Glen Alps where I took these shots. It felt like spring. :)

6. It's mine, too.
I loved the sunbeams plus the fact that I didn't get a flare. :)

8. Thank you very much.
:) It's one of my favorite places to photograph. You just can't go wrong down there. I'm really looking forward to this coming summer when my brother promises to take us across the Bay to explore the little coves. I think we were almost as excited about his new boat as he was.
