What a difference a couple of days make.
Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 03:18 PM by Blue_In_AK
Here's a picture of the snow melting off my roof into the reflection pond formerly known as "my sidewalk." Three days ago a Chinook wind blew in here taking the temperatures in some places here in Southcentral from -40 to +40 in a matter of hours. It was 51 degrees this morning when I got up. Schools have been closed for three days because the side streets are too dangerous for the buses, not to mention the hurricane-force winds. The joys of Alaska in January. ... This is not an unusual weather pattern; it comes around almost every year. It's expected to cool back down into the 20s tomorrow with snow.

4. yeah, but, you don't understand
about 20,000 years ago or so a very prescient Indian person named this area

na wa ho bo bo to no wa bo eh no wah

which either means land of the sky, or Hey! The weather in this valley sure does suck a lot less than the Bearing Strait area, fuck going back there!

see?

8. Fire Season...
Last time we checked down here, it's ALWAYS fire season. Sheesh! We've had the hot Santa Ana winds all week. I think no fires so far because we got drenched in December; but we're definitely on the look out all year round...

Typically the worst part of the year is from late September through end of November and this past year wasn't too bad (for San Diego County). Other counties definitely had their share of flames and smoke, though. I remember two years ago when the flames got within 3 miles of our house. I had both cars packed and ready to run at any moment. Where would I run? I don't know, but away from my house and the fires :)

7. I'm enjoying it . . .
. . . but already seen the annual wild plants dying out. No water in the creeks. Fire season should be interesting if we're done with the rainy season already.

9. What part of the country are you in?
This rainy season has been better than the last few years for San Diego County, so I'm sure the fire season won't be too much worse than any of the recent past...

10. L.A.
We had a few days of good rain. Hopefully there will be more, though in some ways, I guess, more rain means more plants which means greater fire danger once it dries out. But we're in red-flag fire alert now, which is pretty rare for this time of the year.

11. Yes, to rain or not to rain...
I do love the rain but understand what you say about the more rain, the more growth, the more potential for burning...

Red-flag warnings down here as well; hopefully things settle down and it actually rains again. If not, I have a trip to Summitt County, Colorado for a week of snowboarding and I'll get my winter in then :)

12. Sounds like here last week.
We had some flooding last week. Not where I live, but nearby. The snow's mostly melted now and hopefully it stays gone.
